The new Pension Work Bonus rule is taking effect today

It can be difficult to make ends meet on the pension. Even with the recent (small) increase, living costs have become overwhelmingly high.

So, any extra help is always welcome news — and that's exactly what we're here to tell you about, members!

In an effort to help address labour shortages across the country, Australian pensioners will now have the ability to work more hours without receiving a penalty to Centrelink payments.

This change came into effect Thursday, December 1, and adds $4000 to the maximum Work Bonus balance limit, raising the ceiling for qualified working pensioners from $7800 to $11,800.

The change is effective until January 1, 2024, which is when the limit resets to $7,800.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth explained that the move is designed to enable pensioners who are able and willing to work to ‘immediately boost the supply of labour’ needed to meet the demands of the country.

‘The government will also look to strengthen legislation to ensure pensioners who are working don’t get unnecessarily kicked out of the social security system.'

'The Albanese Labor government is committed to improving the lives of all Australians – including older Australians – and, importantly, providing choice.'

Prior to this, there were concerns raised by many senior Australians stuck between wanting to work more hours and preserving their pensions as costs of living skyrocketed.

Aussies who receive the Carer Payment or Disability Support pension are also qualified for the Work Bonus.

All one needs to do is declare his or her income and the Work Bonus will automatically be applied if the eligibility requirements are met.

This development comes after welfare payments saw a boost with indexation in September.

Those on the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, and Carer Payments saw an additional $38.90 a fortnight for singles and $58.80 for couples.

In related news, welfare payments for millions of Australians might see more increases if the Labor-led government has enough votes to support its proposed industrial relations bill.

Key Takeaways

  • The maximum Work Bonus balance will increase from $7800 to $11,800 as of December 1.
  • The changes will automatically come into effect and apply to pensioners and veterans.
  • The changes are effective for a year, and will end on January 1, 2024.

Any extra opportunity to a pay rise for those willing and able to work will be welcome. Even with pension cut, the earnings above are still a welcome boost . I will enjoy the $4 K bonus. Would love to see the bonus scheme become simple though. I love working part time for the brain stimulation, mixing with other people and even enjoying taking on part time study.
Absolutely. I just object to SDC promoting this article the way they have, as being a $4000 handout to pensioners. Maybe they get some payment from the ads on the pages and the number of mugs like me who are responding.
Inviting replies and opinions must be for a reason.. are we just click bait ?

I think every cent extra is an improvement, it's good to see the Government governing not squabbling over he said she said politics 😉
If you suck any harder we will see your face when Albo is walking away. The government does not care about pensioners, because their pension is more per/ fortnight than most of us earned on wages before becoming pensioners.

they will get you back working then cut your pension / support back and you will work for a pittence. Don't get sucked in, you will pay in the long run.

As I tried to explain earlier. You are lucky if you get anything. Most definitely not $4000. And don't forget we have to pay Tax 21% ones over 32279. that's all payment plus income together. That comes on top of it.
That's right don't get sucked in.

New Zealand pensioners can work and their pension is not affected. They have a much weaker economy than Australia, so their government really does a good deal for them.

The government will keep pensioners below the poverty line so you will have to keep working if you can until you expire they dont give a damn about how these price rises affect people theyspend more in a week on lattees than the recent pension rise which was nowhere near enough to cover these price rises on everything.

What help, their just telling you to get a job knowing, in 2024 when things revert back to normal, you won't want give up your job and they will then reduce your pension accordingly. I realize it cost millions if billions of dollars to increase the pension, but how much do our so called pollitions/leaders spend on fancy dinners and over seas junkets. Perhaps if they were on the same pension when they retired things might be different no dought.

This is a joke as it is only for those who work and only for a short time. Most of us are of the generation that super only started in 1988 and a minimal % of a small salary. If they allowed pensioners to work without losing their pension, the government and business sector would get more than if they take the pension off the older workers. eg a single pensioner gets just over $1000 a fortnight = $500 a week . If they earn $1000 a week, they will have to pay tax - to the government of say 30% = $300 per week = $700 per week in the pocket . Then their employer has to pay PAYG to the government for employing that same person and also deposit I think 9% into superannuation which most of the pensioners no longer have. More than that though - the earnings that the pensioners earn plus keeping their pension will be spent back into the economy which in turn increases economy, creates more jobs and businesses and the government gets more than the measly amount that they stop giving the pensioners. Think about it. They take the $500 per week off a single pensioner, the pensioner pays $300 tax (eg) if they earn $1000 per week which means that they are really only working for $200 for the week - $5 an hour for 40 hour week. Let the pensioners work, lt let them keep their pension, this will increase the economy, solve the job vacancies that are everywhere, put some money into a fund for their superannuation and the country would be better off. Out generation know how to turn up for work and to put in a good days work. My husband gets offered work each week and he is 72! I would challenge any politician of any party to live on the pension without super to back it up and see how that works for them, especially if they don't own their own home and have to pay rent.

I’m sorry. But as good as it is to let the pensioners work to earn extra money before their payments are affected may help many in need. But doing it because of a national labour shortage?

Why, when people on the aged pension have worked bloody hard their whole lives and should be earning enough on the pension to enjoy their retirement. We all know that’s nearly impossible though!

I know older people have more knowledge and skills than younger people, but they need to get the serial dole bludgers working. Hell, they might not be interested in working in a particular field their entire life but it’s what we did just to put a roof over our heads and food on the table.

I can’t even count the amount of different jobs I’ve worked. Factory hand, hospitality, office work to name a few…

Temp agencies for all types of employment are out there and they are calling for workers. Out here we have everything from office temps to mining, and trade jobs… it’s not that hard people!

Sorry. Rant over. Just think they need to respect our aged pensioners more.
