The correct ‘anti-spill’ way to pour milk and juice

Are you tired of making a mess when pouring milk or juice out of a carton?

Even though it's a small mistake, it can be really frustrating – especially if you're in a hurry and don't have time to clean up.

Luckily, this Aussie has shared the ‘correct way’ of pouring beverages from cartons.

Dani, a Sydney-based Fashion Blogger who goes by ‘Luxe and Lemonade’ online, has revealed a simple ‘life hack’ in her recent TikTok video.

In her clip – which has now reached thousands of her followers – Dani opens a carton of oat milk with its spout directly over a glass. This resulted in a messy, uneven pour.

After cleaning up the spilled milk, she rotated the carton 180° to have the spout face away from the glass. Dani pours again, and this time the stream was even. The contents can be seen gliding out of the carton and into the glass.

While this isn’t a new tip, most of Dani’s followers were surprised over this ‘hack’.

One user commented: ‘It still trips me out every time I pour since learning this hack. Like, I understand how it works, but for some reason feels so wrong.’

To which Dani replied: ‘Same here’.

In a Quora post, someone asked: ‘What is the physics behind pouring milk from the top versus from the bottom?’

Alejandro Jenkins, a Theoretical Physicist and professor at California Institute of Technology responded that this ‘milk life hack’ is a great illustration of hydrodynamic instabilities – or the study of how fluid flows.

The scientist said that when you pour from the top (or away from the glass as demonstrated by Dani in the video), the liquid never covers all of the [spout’s] opening. Meaning that there’s air on top, and pressure surrounding the liquid.

‘The milk can flow out smoothly under the action of gravity.’

On the other hand, if the carton is nearly full and you pour from the bottom, the milk will cover the opening completely.

When milk flows out, the physicist said: ‘Air trapped inside the carton would have to expand to fill the volume vacated by the milk.’

In other words, the poured milk stops and starts because of the air pressure difference (and causes spills).

Key Takeaways

  • Sydney fashion blogger Dani, who goes by 'Luxe and Lemonade', shared a simple tip on how to pour milk from a carton ‘correctly’.
  • She rotated the carton 180° to have the spout closer to the top of the bottle and the stream was even and spill-free.
  • When you pour from the top the liquid never covers all of the opening.
  • ‘There's always air on top of the milk, at the same pressure as the surrounding atmosphere.’
  • Meanwhile, if you try pouring from the bottom, then the milk will cover the opening completely and lead to spills.
