The cat’s out of the bag! The Public Servants on twice the Prime Minister’s salary

With the cost-of-living crisis stifling much of Australia, it's no wonder that more Australians are feeling the pinch when it comes to making ends meet. Meanwhile, it seems that our government employees are doing just fine – in fact, they’re taking home more money than you might have expected.

Senior public servants are enjoying salaries in CEO fashion, generous 15 per cent super rates, and other perks including cars, free Qantas club membership, and office facilities at home.

One of the highest-paid public servants in the country is the new Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretary Glyn Davis AC, who is bringing home $939,610 in salary and benefits to run the department.

Despite the staggering amount that one could only ever dream of, it’s a significant pay cut for Davis, who previously enjoyed a $1,589,999 package as the Vice Chancellor of Melbourne University. It’s also a little less than the salary of the Chief of Defence Force Angus Campbell, who earns more than $1 million a year.

Davis has been referred to by his colleagues as ‘a unicorn’ thanks to his deep understanding of how governments should work. He also practised as a State Bureaucrat in Queensland and went on to run a multimillion-dollar institution at the University of Melbourne.

But his impressive credentials don’t end there, Mr Davis previously worked as the CEO of the Paul Ramsay Foundation, the nation’s largest philanthropic body, figuring out ‘what to do with the $4 billion’ left behind for good works.

In comparison, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is paid $564,356 a year, while Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles takes home $444,973 and Treasurer Jim Chalmers $406,988. You can read more on this here.

Even though some leaders, including the RBA’s Philip Lowe who earns a base salary of $911,728, have called for a pay raise, Australian public servants are undeniably compensated well by international standards.

For example, Department of Home Affairs Departmental Secretary Mike Pezzullo is paid $892,630, which is reportedly double that of his British equivalent.

The generous pay packets come as the Albanese Government struggles with legislated tax cuts for high-income earners.

Dr Chalmers insisted that the Government’s position on stage three tax cuts remains, but he stressed that any government must practise responsible economic management.

‘No responsible government can ignore a high and rising inflation, a deteriorating global situation, or the fact that we have got these persistent structural pressures on the budget,’ he said.

‘My job, as the Treasurer of this country, is to make sure that the budget is as sustainable as it can be to deal with the challenges that we anticipate. If there’s going to be one defining feature in the budget, it’s going to be responsible economic management.’

The Government is believed to be looking into options to cap the tax cuts for high-income workers, but not abandoning the idea entirely.

On the other hand, some CEOs running publicly owned corporations of the Australian Government are enjoying more lavish salaries than the $1 million payday for the top public servants.

Among them is National Broadband Network Co-Chief Executive Stephen Rue, who has been bringing home $2,647,974.

Australia Post’s Paul Graham, a former Woolworths Executive, has the potential to earn up to $3 million a year. And last but not least, Former Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate was paid $1.5 million.

It is an absolute disgrace. Who controls their salaries? Those above $600K should be taxed to the hilt

It’s make me upset on how unfair life is becoming as we all struggle to make ends meet. What ever happened to a fair go - cost of living for the majority of Australians is hard enough without those on such high wages and perks wanting more and more. When is enough enough ……

As a CSIRO public servant for 10yrs I was considered a ‘bad cop’ for saving taxpayers money in relation to travel costs. Public servants loved fully flexible fares as it earned them higher frequent flyer points which they used for private purposes. One retired GM took his wife around the world business class thanks to the taxpayer. Not to mention the way jobs were identified for ‘mates’ and it didn’t matter who applied as it was already determined.

These salaries are way over the top. Public staff are no longer Public Servants with the 'extra' benefits well above and beyond the salary paid. That braodband head spot salary cannot be justified at 2.5 million, Australia post complains about losses for domestic mail. Grrrr, so out of control

Salaries for some of these heads of Departments is very high but what really gets me is "salaries" of some of the soccer players who get paid 10s of millions of dollars and some 100s of millions of dollars. I find those salaries obscene.

Well certainly above my pension rate. We will never know the real story behind these people and pay rates. Lots of arguments come up. "Pay peanuts, you get monkeys". "Pay well to get the best people". "Are these people's knowledge and labour, worth 10 to 15 times more than the average Australian"? The lists goes on. We live in somewhat of a free country and these figures are the "Market Rate". A lot people pay extreme money for celebrities to perform for us. Just same but different. Makes me ponder about being paid $5 for day for painting white fences on a horse property in my youth. But surely as Seniors, would should realise that life isn't fair, equal or the same for everyone. The haves and have nots. An extreme example of excess and wealth was on display at the recent passing of our Monarch. But, remember we are still able to live reasonably well and happy. Unfortunately, we don't have to look far to see or hear of someone doing it tougher. Lets just appreciate the good points of our own lives.

It's ridiculous when average Australian & pensioners are struggling. A huge disparity!!!

For the 'common' people these salaries seem excessive but just consider that if they were working in the private sector they would be earning 3-5 times this amount. My only objection to their salaries is the 'perks' they get after leaving office. eg. the 'lifetime' pensions and travel benefits. There is no reason they should not be assessed for their pensions the same as the rest of us, ie their assets and income should preclude them from any age pension etc.
Meanwhile, as in previous comments, you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Maybe we should consider more, or at least make them more accountable for their roles. ????

It's ridiculous when average Australian & pensioners are struggling. A huge disparity!!!
These salaries are so far out of this world that it is ridiculous. They should be taxed at a greater rate not have their tax rate reduced. At least 40% should be the norm. Why are they paid more than the Prime Minster must be explained before things get out of hand? What other perks do they reap?

Lets just appreciate the good points of our own lives.
as far as I am concerned no matter what they are paid we still got Monkeys, no offense meant to the actual monkeys as some of them have more brains than most of these so-called public servants or should that be pubic servants

I don't care who you are or what you do, nobody to my mind needs more than $1000 per week to live on. It seems though that the more you get the more you want and are not satisfied with life. I wouldn't mind so much if these people were held responsible for their decisions but they appear to be Teflon coated,;)

Bob Hawke was the most Teflon-coated politician ever, but he was never held accountable for the total loss of Australian manufactoring. In fact, so many treat his memory as heroic. Not in my book I lost my home & business because of his policies & eventually my marriage.

I know that if you pay peanuts you'll get monkeys, but these obscene salaries are ridiculous. Halving them still results in very high salaries. Do it Treasurer...

But of course he won't, as these overpaid execs actually run the country, not politicians.

These public servants? are paid a disgusting amount for servicing mainly their own pockets. These monkeys are paid far from peanuts that's for sure and exactly how much monkeying around was done to allow this?

I remember hearing a few years ago that we wouldn’t get decent politicians unless they were paid a lot more !
Now they are paid a hell of a lot more but we still don’t get decent politicians !
Totally obscene when the usual raise a pensioner gets is $3 a fortnight, this year excepted.
