Teenagers allegedly kick 86-year-old woman after breaking into her unit

Content Warning: This article contains depictions of violence against an elderly woman, which may be unsettling for some. Reader discretion is advised.

In the serene setting of Arcadia Waters, a retirement village in Wandina, Geraldton, tranquillity was shattered in the early hours of a Monday morning.

An 86-year-old woman, a resident of the aged care facility, became the victim of a brazen and violent burglary that has since sparked widespread community outrage and concern for the safety of our seniors.

The incident unfolded when three boys, aged 13, 14, and 16, allegedly scaled a security fence and forcibly entered the woman's unit by kicking in the back door.

The confrontation that ensued was not only a violation of the sanctity of her home but escalated to physical violence.

The court was told that the elderly woman, upon confronting the intruders, was kicked in the chest by one of the teenagers, causing her to fall to the ground—a shocking act of aggression captured on CCTV.

The teenagers are accused of stealing the woman's handbag, credit cards, and car keys before fleeing the scene, only to return later in an attempt to steal her car.

It was during this second intrusion that the violent assault occurred. The woman, who bravely confronted the assailants a second time, was left with severe internal bruising and required hospital treatment.

The Geraldton Children's Court heard the case, where the footage of the incident played a pivotal role.

The teenager alleged to have delivered the kick was already on bail for other offences, leading Magistrate Matthew Walton to refuse bail and send him to Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

‘I take into account the significant issues with Banksia, which I believe have improved,’ Mr Walton said.

‘But with the stark and significant alleged offence supported by CCTV footage, bail is refused.’

Another of the accused was remanded in custody, while the third was granted bail.

This distressing event has highlighted ongoing issues within the community. Senior Sergeant Chris Martin, Geraldton police officer-in-charge, expressed his disappointment, labelling the incident as 'disgraceful’.

‘The community should be assured that we're making every effort to arrest those involved,’ Senior Sergeant Martin said.

The family of the 86-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their gratitude towards Geraldton Hospital, local police, and St John Ambulance for their care and support.

The woman has since been discharged from the hospital, but the emotional and physical scars remain.

This incident comes after a grandmother was in critical condition when she was allegedly attacked by her partner with a stabbing weapon.

The incident is being treated as a domestic violence case, with the grandmother found injured in the garden before being taken to Royal Perth Hospital for emergency surgery. You can read more about the story here.

Unfortunately this seems to be the way of life these days.....these young louts who have no respect whatsoever for other people or property, continue to rob, attack and destroy people's lives. When will the magistrates wake up and make harsher penalties for these low-lifes instead of giving them bail so they can go out and attack someone else. Also about time parents were held accountable when these mongrels are only kids. 🤬

I live in a retirement village and we have experienced breakins as well. In the early hours of the morning a small group entered the grounds and were not worried about making noise. They were going from unit to unit trying to lift roller doors to access the garage with the intent of getting into the house via the door in the unit.

Some of the doors were able to be lifted others not due to the configuration. We are always warned to lock the door from the kitchen into the garage but one of the occupants was away on holidays and had not locked it and the rotters got in and stole quite a lot. They were chased away when a resident confronted them.

We had another occasion where a 90 year old lady woke up to find youths in her bedroom rifling through her drawers. She pretended to be asleep and they left here alone and they eventually existed the unit with some jewellery. She could have reached for the emergency alarm but she had the presence of mind not to do that as that may have aggravated the situation.

No matter where you live you are vulnerable and need to be security conscious.

If caught attack proven and found guilty. thena equal punishment would be plus a custodial sentence is one stroke of the cane for eah of her birhtdays equals 86 straokes each. Then see if the shitbags want to assault the elderly although personally I'd use five 22 calibre bullets over a period of time , one each through the kneecaps, the elbows lastly depending on how I felt the last one in the lower gut?

I am going to be brutally honest here.

I hope there are adequate hanging points in the cells at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Or maybe the older inmates would like some "fresh meat".
Banksia Hill is a juvenile detention centre. Juveniles accused of dangerous acts such as those outlined in the above article, should be sent to an adult detention centre ie Hakea Prison. They’re located only a couple of kilometres from each other. The young thugs wouldn’t be so brave then, would they?!

Magistrates will wake up when they are attacked by these disgusting louts, no one is safe!!!!!

Those bastards needs a good hiding, and the parents made to pay any medical bills, we are to soft here, all they get is a smack on the wrist and let out to do it again and again, you wouldn't do that in Singapore their punishment fits the crime, they will end up killing someone, there is no discipline these days, these little bastards can do what they like and get away with it, I wonder what their parents are like.

They aren't game enough to attack anyone their own age because they know they will get the shit beaten out of them.
They are all little gutless pussies. Keep a walking stick handy and bust some bones. I don't need one to walk but I carry one everywhere. It is reinforced to break bones and leave some serious permanent damage.
