My dad had this problem quite early in life (in his very early 60s). My husband now in his early 80s is showing signs and is also getting a bit forgetful (just early signs). So it’s good to read this article - thank you; our eldest son is a speech pathologist so might have to be called on soon.
 
Hubby has Parkinson's and has trouble with certain foods like mashed potatoes, bread, cake etc. Talked to speech pathologist some years ago and I make lots of sauces and gravies with some foods which helps a lot and certain cakes put butter on it so it doesn't get caught - any food that can be dry is a problem.

Bridgit, Speech Path should have given you a copy of this chart to help you, it sounds to me that your husband needs a minced moist diet. Cake in aged care would be mashed and mixed with custard to moisten. You should be able to search Minced Moist diet suggestions on line. 💐

DLHM, I hope it will help someone, but I am not a Speech Path. Dysphagia is a very serious and nasty condition and needs to be diagnosed properly to make sure the right food level requirements are being used. the chart explains the world standards, so that everyone will be able to feel confident when asking for their appropriate level of food requirement. There should be many recipe suggestions online for these requirements.
