I am over eighty and I have worked out a way to open tightly closed screw top lids. I believe that the lids become "frozen" in place after being closed for some time. I find this system almost always works and I can open any screw-top bottle with my hands.

If I can't open a screw top lid easily, I turn the bottle upside down and, making sure the bottle is upright, bump the top of the lid fairly firmly on the ground a few times. I then hold the bottle upright and , holding a damp( better grip) cloth over the lid , put pressure on the lid to open it. If the lid doesn't open, immediately, I keep holding the pressure on the lid and usually, I feel the grip caused by lack of use is broken and the bottle will open.

I will be very surprised if this doesn't work for you.

This time, for the next tip, all you need is a metal spoon.

Hold the spoon in one hand and the jar in the other, and slide the spoon into the crack between the lid and the glass. Then, push up and back to try and break the seal. If the seal doesn't budge in one spot, don't fret - just rotate the jar and try again in another spot.

Keep working that spoon until you hear that oh-so-satisfying 'pop' of the seal breaking. Once you hear it, you know you've successfully broken the seal and the lid should come off easily.

First, fill a large bowl with hot water that's not quite boiling. Then, flip the jar you're trying to open upside down and leave it submerged in the hot water for up to 10 minutes. This allows science to work its magic - as the contents of the jar heat up, they expand and lessen the difference in pressure between the inside and outside of the jar.

After a while, the lid should be loose enough that you can open the jar with your hand. It may take a bit of effort, but with this method, you'll have that jar open in no time.

Just be careful - it will be hot! Give it about 30 seconds to cool down before attempting to open the jar, and use a towel for grip.

But wait, what if those previous hacks just aren't doing the trick? Don't worry, we've got one more tried-and-true method that's been passed down for generations.

It's a little more traditional, but it can still work wonders. Tilt the jar downward at a 45-degree angle with your non-dominant hand. And then, here's the fun part - aggressively slap the bottom of the jar with the centre of your palm. Keep slapping until you hear that satisfying 'pop' of the seal breaking.



If all else fails, it's time to break out the big guns and get creative with household items.

One easy hack is to grab a rubber band and wrap it around the lid for some extra grip. This will help you get a better hold on the lid and make it easier to twist off. If you want even more traction, try using a pair of rubber gloves. Simply put one glove on your non-dominant hand, use that hand to hold the jar, and use your dominant hand to twist the lid off.

As an older person with severe RA, most jars are too hard for me to open normally, I find this always works - hold the glass end of jar in your hand and tap the rim of the lid a couple of times on the bench - jar open.
 
I use one of the rubber circular mat things. Had them forever, it folds over the jar edge as its soft and pliable, and turning may still be hard but it does open. And beats massive pain in wrist trying to turn lid which doesn't budge. As a kid I was told to run under hot water and use a tdeatowel to hold and one to turn. But love my rubber mat thing.
 
I have a special tool to pop jar lids I bought years ago, works great. I also use an oil filter removal tool that has an adjustable rubber strap to fit all size lids, a plastic handle that gives leverage against the bottle and a bit of muscle and I can open anything from very small lids to huge lids with it. Cost me $5 at repco many years ago.

If u heat the lid for more than a few seconds in hot water the glass also swells so negates the process. I run hot water over the lid then use a non slip mini mat to screw it off.

I took the easy path and bought a simple plastic lid seal breaker that has a section that hooks under the lid then you lift it forward and the lid seal pops sssssssss and the lid screws off easily, never failed me. $7 of magic
 
I learnt years ago to tap the side of the lid on the kitchen bench. Works every time - my husband was suitably impressed
