Sportsmanship, Manners, and Respect

Sportsmanship:

When I was at North Sydney Boys’ High School in 1957, the Headmaster, Mr Mason, during assembly in the morning, from time to time, would announce the winners of some sporting event in which our team had taken part. We would, of course, cheer for our team, but he also insisted we give a round of applause for the opposing team if they’d won. He explained that if anybody had beaten our team, they had to be pretty good and worthy of praise. That was simply good sportsmanship, and we get very little of it these days.

Hi Alan, I am with you. My Father was a Gentleman in every sense of the word and I have tried to live up to his example and at 88 I don't think I will change. I agree with you that the problem today is young women go along with the males as they don't want to be left out. They are not requiring the standard that the young ladies of my vintage required of men. When did you hear last of young man presenting a corsage to a young lady when going on a special date? Young ladies the ball is in your court.

I tend to think of the 3 main problems I see in society for the breakdown of norms we observed growing up. DISCIPLINE; that’s been removed from schooling and home environments. LAZINESS; each generation and especially after covid seems to becoming lazy and entitled. And…INTERNET; social media effecting each of our lives in ways we arent fully aware of.
In my workplace I see a lot of young people. I’m often left shaking my head in wonder at their attitudes and thought processes. But I can’t fully blame them as they are moulded by school, parents, friends and internet. It’s a runaway train really…..

Feminism surely must be included. I feel for the young men of today. There are figures out there stating that most men at age 25 today will not have experienced sexual intercourse. Unheard of! Women have shot themselves in the foot unfortunately and it has created a disaster of a generation.

Loved that article so much...I love having doors opened for me by courteous gentlemen, feminist ruined so many lovely actions simply because they wanted to be "equal" with men. Bring back manners and politeness, we may get back to a much kinder world to live in. I'm glad I am a dinosaur, at least I knew what a lovely world we used to have

I beg to differ with you but, it was the English bowlers who started body line bowling.
As a way to get rid of Bradman and Richardson and Co.

Also I believe we can help the re-emergence of manners by actively encouraging and thanking the youngsters when they are used. i costs nothing t say thank you. I try and say a positive word to the parents as well when I see manners at work.

I thoroughly agree with you.

i could not agree more. it is the parents that are to blame as they are not teaching their kids correctly. (not all) we just do not have leaders any more. to be crude but explicit everyone pisses in pockets.
the chappell episode was disgusring, still very vivid in my mind. funny all you mention are aussies being rude spoil sports.

A twist on the Chappell incident their Grandfather was Vic Richardson ( the gates at Adelaide Oval are named after him) - the Captain of the Australian Cricket team at the time of the Bodyline bowling test!

I love reading Alan's wise reports as I too am a believer in the way he says these common decencies have been eroded. When I was young my Dad had a garage at our home where men would come for repairs to their vehicles. He always said to them " women and children were present" to remind them of thier language. I can say that I never heard any bad language until my first son went to school and he came home one day and said something to his younger brother, a word I had never heard. I had no way of being able to correct him but fortunately my husband was home and we were then able to advise him not to use such words. Yes I was naive as I had never heard such words so I was educated too on that occasion. I also believe that females have only themselves to blame for the way they are treated now as they seem to be as bad as the males for using bad language. i am sure they think it is funny.
