Simple Beef Stew

As our members know, we always try to share recipes that taste good, are easy to make, and are budget-friendly and nutritious. Today, we've stumbled upon a simple beef stew recipe that ticks all those boxes! It’s perfect for those who want a no-fuss, hearty meal prepared with minimal effort.

This tasty beef stew can be assembled in just 15 minutes and left to cook while you enjoy your favourite TV show, read a book, or catch up on some much-needed rest.

Even better, once it's cooked, there's enough for a delicious meal the next night. How's that for convenience? Not only is this dish delectable, but it is also an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. The meat, potatoes and vegetables will fill you up and provide sustained energy throughout the evening.

So let's dive into this lip-smacking dish, which we're sure will quickly become one of your go-to favourite recipes.

Ingredients:

1.5 kg chuck or blade steak, cut into large cubes

60 g plain flour

2 tsp paprika

1 x 400g can peeled tomatoes in juice

1 glass white or red wine (your choice, 2 if you want one to drink while you cook)

2 onions, diced

2 cloves garlic, sliced

1 stick celery, finely sliced

3 medium potatoes, cut into large chunks

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

First, preheat your oven to 180C.

Next, roll the beef cubes in the plain flour mixed with paprika. You can do this easily by shaking the ingredients in a plastic or paper bag. You can also do this by mixing using your hands or a spatula.

Place the seasoned beef into an enamelled, cast-iron casserole dish with enough room for all the ingredients without being too crowded.

Blend the tomatoes and their juice in a food processor, or crush them roughly with a wooden spoon and add to the meat in the casserole dish.

Then, add the remaining ingredients to the casserole: the diced onions, sliced garlic, finely sliced celery, large potato chunks, white or red wine, salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir everything together to combine.

Press a piece of baking paper over the contents of the casserole dish, and then cover it all with a lid. Pop it into your preheated oven and cook for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, check the beef stew's seasoning and adjust it to your liking. Then, test the tenderness of the meat — if it's not quite as tender as you'd like, cook the stew for a little longer.

To serve this heartwarming beef stew, provide a bowl of yoghurt and perhaps a small bowl of sliced pickled dill cucumbers for a refreshing contrast.

If you're not afraid of dirtying another pot, you can also serve this dish with some cooked carrots or another vegetable of your choice as a nutritious side.

This easy beef stew is perfect, especially on those colder nights when you need a warm and comforting dish to fill your belly. So go ahead and put this on your must-try recipe list, and enjoy the simplicity and deliciousness of a well-prepared homemade stew!

Looks great! and would be a filling & tasty winter meal, with any leftover on toast the next day! but i can't eat meat anymore like this - every now and then some fine mince in a sheperds pie, but i still remember my mums stew the best taste and smell ever:_)!

Looks yum. I use my slow cooker in winter.
Same, I use my slow cooker all year for stews etc. can use cheaper cuts of meat and cook on low all day, or on high for 4/5 hours. Meat is so tender it almost melts in your mouth, the smell of it cooking fills the house, so yummy. I use a variety of different ingredients with the meat for different flavours and taste.
