Shoppers Sound Off on Woolworths' ‘Serious Problem’ - Sustainable Solution or Flimsy Disaster?

Paper or plastic? It's the age-old question you might remember hearing once upon a time, but there has been a growing emphasis on finding more sustainable alternatives in recent years.

With increased awareness about the environmental impact of single-use plastics, many people are reevaluating their choices and seeking out more eco-friendly options.

The traditional paper bag, once seen as a more sustainable alternative to plastic, is now being scrutinised for its utility.

Many frustrated shoppers have recently flooded Facebook with posts and comments about a ‘serious’ issue they've been experiencing since Woolworths stopped using plastic bags nationwide.

The supermarket giant began offering reusable paper bags for 25 cents each instead of the 15-cent plastic ones, and it looks like it hasn't been the successful transition initially hoped for.

Customers have claimed that the bags aren’t as sturdy as their plastic counterparts. They tend to break apart when filled with groceries, leading to an increasingly common sight - customers chasing loo rolls and tins of tuna through car parks all over Australia.

One shopper also shared photographs showcasing her torn bags, revealing a broken handle on one and groceries tearing through the bottom of another.

She wrote: ‘Twenty-five cents for bags that just break before you even get to the car.’
Others voiced their frustrations, too, saying they had experienced similar problems with their purchases.

'Miss the bags already, the paper bag broke on the way to the car,' said one shopper.

Another added: 'How many people are losing all their groceries with the new paper bags?'

Some pointed out that the bags can hold fewer items compared to the phased-out plastic option.

One shopper claimed: ‘Four items to a bag is all they’re good for. No thanks!’

In response to the growing complaints, a Woolworths spokesperson said that the supermarket stands by the quality of the paper bags, claiming they have been tested to carry up to 6kg safely.

However, the reviews on Woolworths paper bags aren't all bad - some shoppers have been saying they actually prefer them.

One shopper said: ‘I like them. They stand up better in the car.’

‘Love them, just need a plastic one for cold and frozen, they don’t do well when wet. At least these have handles, the ones we had 35 years ago didn’t even have handles,’ another added.

A third chimed in: ‘Used them prior to plastic bags, no issues.’

I have nylon bags for the supermarket I take them into the supermarket the pack my items into them when I get back home I unpack them and put them back in the car really for the next time, it's not rocket science if you purchase good quality bags they last for many trips to the supermarket.

One thing I don't understand I remember before plastic bags groceries were packed in cardboard boxes that the supermarket had the goods delivered in, I don't understand why they don't do it now it would solve the problem.

For all the complainers out there, why not just buy 1/2 a dozen or so reusable shopping bags (including a cooler bag) and then you wouldn't have to buy bags again. We've had ours for years without a problem..

Paper bags suck. They break and do not fit as much in them as the plastic ones. Woolworths you have a right to listen to us as we are the ones paying for them.

I have a collection of reusable bags from Coles, Woolies, Aldi and a few other stores that I have collected over the last twenty years or so, and they are still going strong! Never had to resort to plastic or paper bags.

I have been using my own bags for over 30 years. When I was strong enough to lift it into my car, I used a trolley and it was great.
Don't waste money on bought bags. There are plenty of options out there in cloth that are also environmentally friendly. My sister, who is a craft whiz, makes shopping bags out of bits of left over fabric from her projects. Some of them are amazing.
When I was younger and living in a flat, I had a most traumatic experience with paper bagging. Back then, that was all available unless you had your own string bag. I got caught in a rain storm and ended up with my groceries in the gutter, on the footpath, the road and some lost forever.
Paper bagging has always had drawbacks.

The onl shoppers who are having trouble with the paper bags are those who do not use/re use their own. Where have all the 15c plastic bags gone. I have a tub in my car FULL of bags. If I go to the shops, I take the trolley to the car and then pack - how hard is that - it is quicker and easier - you can pack according to home storage. Then I fold the bags and put them back in the car - how hard is that. I wouldn't pay 25c for a paper bag!!! When travelling, I buy fold up bags as souvenirs
I started buying the reusable bags as soon as the ban on plastic bags was announced, Ihave a mall mountain of them in the pantry as well as in the car they are all folded neatly and stored in one of the "fridge"bags so are easy to take out of the car before I go into the Shopping Center. My only complaint is that between the bag carrying the bags and my handbag I feel like a bleedin pack horse.

I’ve always preferred paper bags & haven’t had any problems with them, though l have bought the large new bags from Woolworths that feature indigenous prints. They should last for years.
Paper bags are easy to recycle if you can’t find a use for them. When l was first married 50 years ago it was either paper bags or boxes for groceries so we’ve almost gone back to how it used to be. Hope string bags don’t reappear, l always struggled with them.

South Australia banned the use of plastic supermarket shopping bag on May 3rd 2009, (that is approximately 400 million plastic bags that have not gone to landfill) we have been providing our own shopping bags ever since. Just how hard is it to remember to take one with you….if you MUST use a paper bag…do not put all the heavy items in one, force of nature the items will break through the bottom…

The point is that by using paper bags how many more trees needs to be cut down.?

Now, don't the paper bags which are made by wood pulp go against the principle of maintaining and saving the environment.?

Nevertheless, I always bring my own bags and if I forget to get them out of the car, I buy more of the material ones.

What shocks me is why in this day and age people don't already have enough of their own bags. Have them permanently in the car for goodness sake. Don't "forgetthem". Or take your groceries in the trolley and pack them at the car. You'll soon remember.

I don't miss the bags for a second as I take my trusty basket with me every time I go grocery shopping.
The point is that there are people out there (Like Me), that we go shopping once a week (Possibly even longer) due to the distance from town to the country, the farm, and the small town where supermarket are non existant.
So, a basket, regardless of the size, wouldn't suit the purpose. The back of the car is always fool after we do the shopping.

PAPER bags were phased out decades ago because of "Concern for the Environment", and sustainability of tree felling for paper. Now we phase out plastic bags and replace them with PAPER bags because of "Concern for the Environment". Both times policies were/are "backed by science". Make up your mind people !

As I need to get my groceries delivered, I cannot provide my own bags. Personally, my plastic bags were nearly always reused as garbage bags, carry bags, storage bags, waterproof bags for bringing home wet bathers etc. I have no practical use for the paper bags now, so I pay out extra money, only to toss them straight into the recycle bin, and now have to pay out even more money to buy PLASTIC bags for garbage, and anything that may contain moisture. I have no waterproof carry bags now.
