Shopper calls out Coles for ‘hidden’ display, receives backlash from other customers

Father's Day is a time to celebrate the special men in our lives who have contributed so much to our upbringing or our child's upbringing. It's a day to show our appreciation for all they've done for us - whether it's our biological fathers, fathers of our children, stepfathers, foster fathers, adoptive fathers, or any other father figure who has played a significant role in our lives.

Last Sunday, we celebrated Father's Day here in Australia and we're sure some of our members felt the warmth and love of your children and grandchildren who spent time with you on this special day.

While this celebration is full of joy and good times to be had, it also brings with it some pesky (or petty, rather) issues that can become a nuance to the spirit of this holiday…

A dad in Adelaide has criticised Coles for having a 'hidden' Father's Day display at his local store, expressing his disappointment and pointing out that the store's Mother's Day gift selection in May was larger than the Father's Day display.

Airing his frustration on Facebook, the man also asserted that the Mother's Day exhibit took up three bays and was located at the front of the store, while the Father's Day area was placed in the 'back aisle with no focus or attention'.

The parent expressed his disappointment at being made to feel 'less' in his post, which included pictures of the two displays.

He wrote: 'Father’s Day v Mother’s Day?'

'Why is it that we are hidden at the back aisle with no focus or attention?'

'One month ago it was homewares on display, last weekend you put footy finals on display.'

'Yet Mother’s Day for a month leading up to it has three full bays on full display.'

'Father’s Day is just as important as Mother’s Day.'

'So why are we made to feel less than?'

The post has prompted other social media users to criticise the dad, with some leaving nasty comments that are not suitable for publication.

One user wrote: 'Frankly if you feel ‘less than’ and not as important because of how much shelf space a supermarket devotes to a contrived celebration day it’s more of a “you” thing than a “them” thing.'

'It’s not about equality, it’s about economic reality. We spend significantly more on Mother’s Day than we do for Father’s Day, thus it gets more space.'

The original poster, however, didn't take the criticism lying down and insisted that it was crucial to 'raise awareness to equality'.

He said: 'This just sums up why men don’t speak out, yet R U OK? day is just on the horizon - a day that started out for mental health, getting men to open up and speak out.'

'But when you do, you are shot down.'

'I’m thicker skinned than that, as hurtful as it can be.'

The claims have been refuted by a Coles representative, who noted that the supermarket offers a large selection of Father's Day presents available across many price points for sale.

The following are just a few of the 'Father's Day' items offered at Coles, Best Buys, and Liquorland:

  • Giant Chocolate Doughnut, $7.50, available at Coles
  • Superhero Mug Gift Box, $6, or Marvel Superhero Glass & Socks set, $15, available at Coles
  • AFL/NRL Piggy Bank, $12.00, available at Coles
  • Blaupunkt 50” UHD Android TV, $399, available at participating Coles Best Buy stores
  • Decathlon Golf Set 7 Clubs Adult 100 Right-Handed Graphite, $399, available at Best Buys
  • Kuchenprofi Arizona Barbecue 16 Piece Set, $129 set, available at Best Buys
  • Wallaroo 3-in-1 Charcoal BBQ Smoker, $69, available at Best Buys
  • ‘Dad Beer’, $12, available in packs of four at Liquorland and First Choice Liquor.

While it's lovely to give gifts on Father's Day, we should also emphasise the spirit of the holiday by spending quality time with our loved ones. Whether it's going out for a meal, taking a hike together, or just sitting around and chatting, it's the time we spend together that truly counts.

So let's not get too caught up in the materialistic aspects of Father's Day this year. Instead, let's focus on what's really important: celebrating the dads in our lives and cherishing the time we have with them.

What are your thoughts on this? Better yet, for our members who are fathers or grandfathers, do you find this offensive? Do you think stores should also go all-out on their displays for Father's Day similar to the Mother's Day celebration?

Mothers day or indeed Fathers day should not be about the tangible rewards or the amount of money spent. I know that we would much rather receive a hand drawn picture or card or whatever than something bankrolled by the other parent. That the kids have put in time and effort to show their love is much more relevant than how much they can spend on what is in a lot of instances tatt.:)

Poor fellow needs to get a life I'm with you would rather get something made by the kids in fact I still have every thing my children and grandchildren have ever made for me

Mate build a bridge and get over it.. Almost 40 years ago my children used to do drawings, make home made cards and pick both my parents and myself flowers from weeds. As a single parent, I didn't have money to splash on pressies I believe these days , including Valentines Day are just a colossal waste of money. If you love someone be it Mother, Father, Grandparents , Partner , you love, respect and appreciate them every day not just one day of the year ..

Surely the size of the display at stores should not offend you. It is your actions that show your parenting. I dont like Mother's or Father's day. I have told my kids if they cant think of me on any other day of the year, dont bother because they are told to on a specific day. A visit or a text is all I need from my kids. Not a person who enjoys fuss.

It doesn’t surprise me in the least that a section of society is up in arms about this gentleman’s post. Modern thinking is tied up with the edict: If you’re not with me, you’re against me. Middle ground is disappearing, the world’s becoming black and white.

While I wouldn’t post about this on social media, knowing how many would react, I see the point he’s making. I had actually remarked to hubby that there were hardly any TV commercials for Fathers’ Day this year. Leading up to Mothers’ Day, we’re bombarded with commercials for all sorts of goods and services.

While most probably won’t agree with me, I take the view that this is merely a symptom of an underlying disease. There are many symptoms of this disease evident, but most don’t care or don’t realise what’s going on. It’s the desire to gradually make men less relevant in our society. Bettina Arndt is an excellent source of information on this.

My wife noticed about this in the shops we went in more than I did. 🙂 There wasn't that much choice as I think kids are keener on their mothers than fathers? Why should the shops spend extra money on goods they're not going to sell?

I wasn't that bothered whether I got anything from our son. I prefer him spending his money on his mother on Mother's Day. We went to his house and had a Chinese takeaway. No point being ripped off by local restaurants just for that day. (I know of one restaurant that put out a message that they cancelled their Fathers Day meal due to lack of bookings.)

Anyway he's now married and got a son, but he's still more of a "mummy's boy" after all these years.🙂 So I was with him and my grandson for the day. I didn't need presents and big meals to know I'm loved by them.

I have to agree with him. Fathers are just as important as Mothers, just because some don't feature much in their kids lives doesn't mean the others should be treated less than Mothers. A lot of men are doing it on their own as well as single Mothers. The fact is, though, why only treat any of them with love and gifts on a special day when they have all year round to appreciate them, just saying.

This has always been the case. Mother's Day displays, marketing and exposure has always been bigger than Father's Day. Presents for both are very different. In 2021 the spend on Mothers was 10% greater than on Fathers in Australia. Lots of variety for mums and basically tools and BBQs for dad's. Because of this difference, you won't find that many dad presents in supermarkets.

  • Superhero Mug Gift Box, $6, or Marvel Superhero Glass & Socks set, $15, available at Coles
  • AFL/NRL Piggy Bank, $12.00, available at Coles

I do believe the pendulum has gone to far the other way, it always does that's life. And I do also agree a bloke can not speak out as it's always called sexist. But this complaint does seem petty as am sure they are not being sexist at all, it's business and if they thought they could make more money with a huge display they would, $ talk.

Supermarkets don’t usually sell car bits, eskies, gym stuff, etc. SuperCheap, Autobahn have heaps of Fathers Day stuff, but not much for Mother’s Day. Don’t think too many Mums would care.

I think women make sure their children have a present ready for Father's Day and more likely it's purchased from Bunnings or an auto store, than from a supermarket.
Also men and children may need a big in-your-face display to remind them of Mother's Day.

Maybe because the mother almost always is ahead in shopping for Father's Day - does not need reminding so items at put to the back of the store whereas father can be slightly remiss in getting their present for Mother's Day and need a lot of nudging - hence the front of store "reminder". Just saying

I agree.

What is all the hype about? A father would possibly prefer something from Bunnings rather than something like chocolates. I tell my 4 children to just send me a phone message on Father's Day. We however get together for dinner on Sat. evening for this. They are wives with children so it is normal for them to spend time with their husbands & children. Am l wrong?

The other consideration is that many families today are a single parent, a mother only.
