Airport parking chaos sparks frustration for travellers. Image source: TikTok/gretaafraser

Nothing tests your patience quite like circling an airport car park for the tenth time, desperately hunting for a space as your flight draws nearer.

The tension builds with every lap, each empty bay already taken or blocked.

And when you finally spot one, only to find a thoughtless parker has made it impossible to use—it can push anyone to the edge.

Melbourne Airport parking dispute sparks viral debate

A recent incident at Melbourne Airport has sparked heated debate online, with Aussies split over whether one woman’s response to a badly parked car was clever revenge or simply going too far.

Melbourne content creator Greta Fraser experienced this exact frustration recently when she encountered a driver parked across the lines in an already packed airport car park.

Fraser decided to squeeze her car right up beside the offender, making it difficult for them to access their own vehicle.

'Airport parking is chocker block, and this rude person has parked like this!! I have squeezed in beside them and hope they have to climb through their passenger seat to get to their driver's seat now.'

Greta Fraser, TikTok

Parking frustrations fuel online debate

Fraser’s video quickly went viral, drawing sharply divided responses.

Some viewers praised her ‘petty justice,’ while others cautioned she might have targeted someone who had simply made the best of a tricky parking situation.

Melbourne Airport’s parking woes provided the perfect storm for Fraser’s frustration.

Over 2,000 car park bays were temporarily closed to make way for a new express road project, leaving travellers scrambling for the remaining spaces.

Officials warned that 'ALL car parks are very busy this week, with limited drive-up spots available' and urged people to 'consider alternative transport options.'

Melbourne Airport parking costs (2025)

Value Car Park: $19 per day

Terminal Car Park: $12 per day (online bookings)

Drive-up rates: $7-$89 per day depending on location

Free options: 60 minutes in Wait Zone, first 15 minutes in Terminal Car Park

The debate over parking etiquette

Even with Melbourne Airport claiming to be 'the cheapest capital city airport for daily parking,' $12-19 per day for basic options still stings, and wasted spaces quickly add to travellers’ stress.

Fraser’s video sparked a wider conversation about parking etiquette.

Supporters encouraged her actions, suggesting she could 'get closer' or even report the vehicle to the Australian Federal Police.

Others pointed out that poorly parked cars can sometimes result from earlier issues, creating a domino effect that unfairly blames later arrivals.

However, deliberately blocking another vehicle carries potential risks.

Forcing someone to climb through a passenger door can increase the chance of accidents or injuries, particularly in busy car parks.

There are also legal implications—interfering with someone else’s vehicle could be considered harassment or property interference.

Furthermore, small disputes can escalate quickly, turning ‘petty justice’ into confrontation or damage.

Smart parking strategies for busy airports

  • Book parking online in advance—it’s often 20-50 per cent cheaper than drive-up rates

  • Arrive with extra time to search for spaces during busy periods

  • Consider off-site parking options with shuttle services

  • Use airport apps to check real-time parking availability

  • Keep calm and carry a camera if disputes arise

Better alternatives for frustrated parkers

Reporting poor parking to Melbourne Airport security allows staff to handle the issue, and taking photos of the situation provides proof if action is needed.

Off-site parking or shuttle services, like the SkyBus from Southern Cross Station for $22 or rideshare options from $45-$65, can also save time and stress.

Construction delays in the T123 car park areas may last up to an hour during peak periods, but the $1 billion investment in terminals and road infrastructure—including The Naarm Way Stage 2 project—promises improved access, safety, and reduced congestion in the long term.

Meanwhile, online bookings reward travellers with cheaper rates, starting at $12 per day.

Did you know?

Melbourne Airport Value Car Park Offers a free 24/7 shuttle service that runs every 15 minutes to all terminals, providing a budget-friendly alternative that avoids terminal parking chaos entirely.

Final thoughts on airport parking disputes

What This Means For You

Parking disputes can escalate quickly when drivers feel frustrated or powerless, turning a simple trip to the airport into a stressful experience.

With Melbourne Airport’s ongoing construction significantly reducing available car park bays, travellers are feeling the pressure more than ever.

Thankfully, safer and more constructive options exist, such as reporting poor parking to security, using shuttle services, or choosing off-site car parks to avoid the hassle altogether.

Planning ahead and booking online can also save money, time, and unnecessary confrontation, helping everyone navigate the chaos with a little more calm and control.

For those who travel frequently, especially during busy periods, these strategies are essential to avoid frustration and ensure a smoother start to the journey.

If you thought airport parking frustrations were limited to crowded car parks and inconsiderate drivers, there’s another side to the story that can hit your wallet hard.

Some vehicles left unattended for long periods can accumulate thousands of dollars in fines, showing just how costly parking disputes or neglect can become.

For a striking real-life example, check out this eye-opening case that highlights the unexpected consequences of leaving a car in an airport car park.

I have had several situations where after returning from shopping, a car would be parked over their lane, blocking entery ino my car. Clearly the driver must have been intoxicated to be so oblivious to park so close to my driver's side. I waited for 10 minutes for the driver, and then had no option other than to slide from the passenger side into the driver's seat. Another annoying thing is when a car will literally park taking up half of two car spots. One has to wonder what tree did they fell out of to do something so wreckless. Common courtesy and respect when parking, seems to be very rare with drivers in this modern day and age. I guess the more that modern technology provides conveniences, the more that people are starting to feel that they are entitled to the convenience of parking however the car stops in the parking lot. Sheer laziness or totally intoxicated. 🙏🦋

Simple. If you can’t park, don’t drive. At least check your car is correctly between the lines. It’s really selfish otherwise.

Some problems are caused by the increased size of vehicles such as the big utes and SUVs, which do not fit into the narrow parking spaces in some centres. We have people in our local village car park who ensure that they have space on one side so they can get out but ignore that they are only parked a few centimetres from the car on the other side. The width of parking spaces need to be increased to allow for the change in car size, a standard size may help alleviate the issue.

Some people park like that when there is no cars around, they just have no idea how to park and they are not necessarily a big vehicle. Just an ignorant driver and far too many of them around these days in too much of a hurry to do things properly.

I am actually a very accomplished driver, having driven all sorts of vehicles over the years, but one of the things I did learn is that most people have this idea that they should park as close as they can to a shopping centre entrance. Who knows? Beats me. Lacking of having to take those few extra steps I would think. A bit of a self centred attitude? Perhaps.
At my age, I don't care if I have to walk the extra. So I am prepared to park further away and you know what? The benefits are that 1/You get the extra steps in for your daily exercise, 2/There are less cars parked further away leaving plenty of spaces, and the unlikelihood of copping an unreported love tap that slightly damages your car. Self centred attitude from those shits!!!! Not like they would hang around and fess up to damaging your car.

Ignorance must be bliss as so many, bloody people seem to be happy in their acknowledged ignorance?

Are we sure that this driver is the original culprit what if the driver on their left was parked over the white line making the next car park close or on top of their parking bay line this has happened to me so letters to both cars & photos taken of all cars so I can prove damage to my vehicle

At the Adelaide Airport there is a separate area you can park cars if they are going to be there for longer than usual

Same with Melbourne and Sydney 🌞

I don't think this person went too far.
All is fair in love and war as the old saying goes.

If some grew some more brain cells and thought things through a bit, shouldn't even come to that.

Seen that often enough - especially when there's a series of big 4WDs in a row. One parks a bit close to the line. Next one parks on the line so driver can get out of the vehicle. Next one parks a bit over the line for the same reason and so on until there's just not enough room in the next parking space for anything but a motorcycle.
Then one of the 4WD vehicles leaves - and all those 'downstream' are considered inconsiderate drivers! Well, in fact, they are - they could have parked elsewhere and walked. Usually do them the world of good.
Bad luck if you're like someone I knew in Darwin - hospitalised with an acute disc rupture, spine fused. He was above average height, the only vehicles he could get into were 4WD (SUVs weren't around at the time). He was entitled to a disabled carpark - but we all know how often those are respected by people who are only morally handicapped!
Mind you, D usually parked and walked (with a cane and some difficulty and pain) if there wasn't room close to the shops. He was one of the 'me' generation (aka baby boomers) who learned to respect other people's rights, as well as making the best of a bad situation.

This is the very reason why I rather park with my drivers side near a pillar which usually then gives me a little more room to open my door since I have a "Disability Parking" card. I never park in the "Disability Parks" provided because most are the SAME SIZE AS A REGULAR PARKING SPACE which doesn't give me enough room to enter/exit my vehicle. Also they're usually close to entry/exit to the stores so then one can still have their car damaged by other shoppers pushing their trolley in between the cars and they DON'T CARE.
After having 4 hip replacements and because of the first surgeon "stuffing up" my prosthetic" placement I now walk wobbly with walking sticks and have great difficulty in entering/exiting my vehicle, I've also had spinal surgery. I'd much rather get in a few more steps on my pedometer than have my vehicle damaged.🚗 👩‍🦯 😊 Hope everyone has had a good long weekend.

Dear member Josephine B, good afternoon and thankyou for your post. I can relate to you so much. Firstly, sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficult issues walking. When I came back to my car, after my doctors appointment, l had very little room to get into the driver's seat, because of my walker. Fortunately, the driver of the car beside me, came back at the same time, and quickly moved their car to make room for me. But, l do like your idea about parking the car near a pillar, that provides more room to open the door. Thankyou for sharing that valuable idea with myself and all members here at SDC. Wishing you good health and a beautiful week. 🙏🦋

Not a long weekend in Victoria but enjoy yours hope the weathers kind to you.🌞
Dear member Littleboy8, thankyou for your post. If you read the post written by member Josephine B, you would have noticed that she was talking in the past tense, that being " hope everyone has HAD a good long weekend.
