Self-serve checkouts just got a lot easier thanks to this Coles sticker
Here at the SDC, we love a good hack that makes our lives a little bit easier – especially when it comes to grocery shopping.
Thankfully, Australian supermarket giant Coles has come up with a helpful solution to make unloading your trolley at the self-serve checkouts much simpler. And all it took was a cleverly placed sticker!
A savvy shopper recently spotted the sticker at her local Coles store, which read: ‘Park your trolley here’, along with an arrow pointing to the spot where you typically place your basket while scanning and bagging your groceries.
Many of us here on the SDC aren't big fans of self-checkout. However, this tip may make your life a little easier if you DO use them. Source: OpenAI.
It turns out that this particular self-serve bay had been designed in such a way that people could slide their smaller trolleys right into the space where the basket usually goes. This saves time and space, as customers can quickly scan products from their trolleys and place them directly into their bags without having to unload everything first! And no awkwardly apologising for taking up too much space with your trolley!
The woman who discovered this useful tip posted a video of herself using the newly-discovered method on social media, captioned: ‘When you discover where the trolley is supposed to go at self-checkouts instead of being in everyone’s way.’ The post quickly went viral, amassing over 3 million views within days!
Needless to say, many other people were amazed by this revelation and expressed their gratitude for having learned something new today. One commenter even declared they would try out this method during their next trip to Coles!
‘I must have missed that during my self-checkout employee orientation,’ said one user.
‘WHAAAAAAA? I’m freaking 45 years old and just learned this! I’m gonna try it’, added another.
It’s worth noting that there’s actually nothing particularly ‘new’ about this discovery, with Coles reportedly ‘rolling out’ (ha ha) the feature in 2021.
‘Coles is making it easier for customers to use trolleys in our self checkout area by lowering the basket shelf so our smaller trolleys can fit right over the top. This saves space and means customers can quickly scan products from their trolley and place them directly into their bags,’, a spokesperson said at the time.
Woolies has a similar system in place, as outlined in the video below:
We know many of you don’t much care for self-checkouts, and we understand why. Having said that, for those who don’t mind using them once in a while, if you find yourself struggling with uploading your trolley every time you hit them up, we recommend taking note of this hack next time you do your grocery shopping.
