How does the ranking work?
The Henley Passport Index is based on how many places people with those passports can access without a visa. But the total score also includes countries that require passport holders to obtain a visa upon arrival, a visitor's permit or an electronic travel authority.
To compile its rankings, the firm uses exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association. This data covers a total of 227 destinations, which includes countries, as well as areas that aren't officially recognised as countries such as Taiwan.
But not all of these 227 destinations are counted. Henley & Partners only ranked 199 passports.
Australia's passport power - how does it stack up?
Australia ranks 23rd on the Henley Passport Index, which puts it in the 8th tier along with Canada, Greece, and Malta. There are 22 countries ahead of it on higher tiers. A score of 185 means Australians can travel to 185 countries with relative ease.
Over the past three years, Australia's ranking has stayed the same, holding steady at 8th. But in the past, it's fallen as low as 9th (in 2019, 2010, and 2006). On the flip side, Australia had some great years too, reaching a peak of 6th in 2015, 2013, and 2012.

On the flip side, 42 destinations around the world require Aussie passport holders to jump through some visa hoops, whether it's obtaining a visa before departure or getting pre-approval from the government for a visa upon arrival.
