Veggiepatch, I hated school and was not the most compliant student. I would be caned in class and then made to sit in the passage reading Shakespeare, which I loved. It wasn’t until a nun saw me acting in A MidSummer Nights Dream that she realised I enjoyed it. I had 11 years of nuns teaching. I first received the cane on day two, grade one and it was repeated with startling regularity for the remaining 11 years. The head mistress was vicious and I learnt very young that she got uncomfortable if you eyeballed her, and refused to cry. After an incident in grade 5, just for being out of bounds in the side paddock, she said she was going to cane me until I cried. I vowed she would get tired before that happened. Thirty four cuts later she gave up! I won that round.
