SDC Trivia Game #511 - 18/10/2024

Question 1: How is the philosophical view of nihilism best described?

Nihilism is a philosophical view that rejects all moral and religious principles, and often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. It holds that life is without inherent meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value.

Question 2: If you were to order a "Black and Tan" at a bar, what two drinks would be combined to make it?

A "Black and Tan" is a beer cocktail made by layering a pale ale (usually Bass Ale) on the bottom and a dark stout (usually Guinness) on top. The differing densities of the beers create a striking two-tone look in the glass.

Question 3: Which famous author wrote the novel "The Old Man and the Sea"?

Ernest Hemingway, one of the most influential American authors of the 20th century, wrote the novella "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1951. The book tells the story of an aging fisherman's struggle with a giant marlin and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953.

Question 4: How old was Tutankhamun when he became Pharaoh of Egypt?

Tutankhamun, also known as "King Tut", ascended to the throne of Egypt around 1332 BC at the age of 9. He reigned for approximately 10 years until his death at age 19, possibly due to an infected broken leg, malaria, or a rare bone disorder.

Question 5: Why does Fred Flintstone always wear the same outfit?

In the early days of animation, having a character wear the same outfit in every scene saved time and money. This is why many classic cartoon characters like Fred Flintstone are always seen in the same clothes.

Question 6: Who played the character of Rachel Green in the popular sitcom Friends?

Jennifer Aniston rose to international fame for her portrayal of Rachel Green on the television sitcom Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Her character was known for her fashion sense and on-again, off-again relationship with Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer.

Question 7: Which ancient Greek philosopher is known for the famous paradox about Achilles and the tortoise?

Zeno of Elea, a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, is known for creating several paradoxes, including the one about Achilles and the tortoise. In this paradox, Achilles is in a footrace with a tortoise. Achilles allows the tortoise a head start of 100 meters. If we suppose that each racer starts running at some constant speed, then after some finite time, Achilles will have run 100 meters, bringing him to the tortoise's starting point. During this time, the tortoise has run a much shorter distance, say 10 meters. It will then take Achilles some further time to run that distance, by which time the tortoise will have advanced farther; and then more time still to reach this third point, while the tortoise moves ahead. Thus, whenever Achilles reaches somewhere the tortoise has been, he still has some distance to go before he can even reach the tortoise. This paradox is used to illustrate the concept of infinity.

Question 8: In what city would you find the Sagrada Família, designed by Antoni Gaudí?

The Sagrada Família is a large unfinished church in Barcelona, designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Construction began in 1882 and Gaudí worked on the project for over 40 years until his death in 1926. The church is still under construction today, with an estimated completion date of 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death.

Question 9: Where was the popular TV series 'Seinfeld' set?

Seinfeld' was set in New York City's Upper West Side. While most of the show was filmed in Los Angeles, the series made numerous references to New York City landmarks, culture, and lifestyle throughout its nine seasons.

Question 10: In the sitcom "Friends", what is Chandler Bing's middle name?

In the episode "The One With Rachel's Date", it is revealed that Chandler's middle name is Muriel, much to his embarrassment. He was named after his father Charles' favorite author.

I am honestly getting absolutely bored with questions that have been repeated 5, 6, 7, times or more, and garbage about stupid American Sitcoms. It is obvious that you are doing copy and paste directly from US websites.

How about a few hundred more about Oztrayleeah, NZ, or even Taswegia. Or do think we aren't worth it.

Reading your post about the dodgy Bee Venom scam immediately reminded me of an old black and white Aussie movie.

One of the Smiley ones. When Smiley brings Granny her bees. If you need more exalmpes, just ask SDC members.

General knowledge subjects about the natural world etc are pretty cool.
