SDC Trivia Game #279 - 29/02/2024

Question 1: Which company was the first to launch a commercially successful personal computer?

Apple Inc., then known as Apple Computer, launched the Apple II in 1977, which is considered one of the first highly successful mass-produced microcomputers. While there were personal computers before the Apple II, such as the Altair 8800 and Apple's own Apple I, they did not achieve the same commercial success. IBM entered the personal computing market later with the IBM PC in 1981.

Question 2: What plant is the national emblem of Ireland?

The shamrock has long been a symbol of Ireland, associated with Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who is said to have used the three-leafed plant as a metaphor for the Christian Holy Trinity.

Question 3: What is the psychological term for the study of how people relate to each other and to their environments?

Social psychology explores how individuals perceive and influence each other. It covers topics like conformity, attitudes, group behavior, and leadership. Classic experiments in social psychology include the Asch conformity experiments and the Stanford prison experiment.

Question 4: If you were to purchase a pair of 'Brookes', what type of clothing item would you be buying?

Brookes is a colloquial term sometimes used to refer to 'Brooks', a popular brand known for athletic shoes, particularly running shoes. They are known for producing high-quality footwear with an emphasis on fit and comfort, and they cater to a wide range of sports and outdoor activities.

Question 5: Where is the headquarters of the multinational technology company Apple Inc. located?

Apple Inc.'s headquarters, known as Apple Park, is situated in Cupertino, California. The campus is noted for its striking architecture and circular design, sometimes referred to as "the spaceship," and was completed in 2017.

Question 6: Who wrote the play "Death of a Salesman"?

Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" premiered on Broadway in 1949 and is widely considered a classic of American theater. Miller won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work, which examines the life of Willy Loman, a traveling salesman.

Question 7: What is the temperature in degrees Celsius (°C) equivalent to absolute zero?

Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature where nothing could be colder and no heat energy remains in a substance. It is the point at which the fundamental particles of nature have minimal vibrational motion, retaining only quantum mechanical, zero-point energy-induced particle motion. It is a key concept in the thermodynamics of material substances.

Question 8: The national flower of Japan is often associated with the practice of Hanami. What is this flower called?

Cherry Blossom, or Sakura, is deeply symbolic in Japanese culture, representing the fragility and beauty of life. Hanami is the traditional Japanese custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers, especially during the cherry blossom season, which typically takes place in spring.

Question 9: Which gas is the most abundant in the Earth's atmosphere?

Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the Earth's atmosphere, which is far more than oxygen's 21%. This balance is vital for life on Earth, as nitrogen is essential for the growth of plants and the formation of amino acids in animals.

Question 10: In psychological terms, what is the phenomenon where a person experiences improved performance on simple or well-rehearsed tasks in the presence of others?

Social facilitation is the tendency for people to perform better on simple tasks when in the presence of other people. This is because the presence of others increases physiological arousal, which can improve performance on tasks one is good at or finds easy. However, this same arousal can impair performance on complex or unfamiliar tasks.
