SDC Team Weekly Recap #3

Good morning!

How have you all been this week? We thought we’d check in and give you some insight into lives and what’s happening behind the scenes at the SDC!

Jon
I’m currently fighting off a sore throat and cough at the moment, so it’s felt like a bit of a long one for me. Definitely excited for a quiet weekend with lots of time lying flat and sipping on a cuppa.

I bought a new electric toothbrush, the Oral-B Pro 700, and am unironically excited about it - which I think is indisputable proof that I’m officially getting old.

It seems like only yesterday my perfect weekend was going out and partying with friends all night, but these days I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than stay at home and relax with my new toothbrush!

Maddie
Hello hello! I had a fairly uneventful week, so I will keep things short and sweet. I’ve been working a lot which is always an absolute pleasure for you lot, but funnily enough, my recommendation of the week is going to be almond croissants. I know, groundbreaking, recommending a croissant.

However, hear me out. I have somewhat recently started a new tradition where after my Friday morning pilates class, I head to my favourite local cafe and buy myself and my partner, Hugh, a coffee and an almond croissant each. It’s honestly the best way to start the day, and end the week and it ALWAYS puts me in a good mood for Friday.

Not to mention, seeing it’s become a bit of a ritual, I have become good friends with the lovely girls that work at the cafe, and it got me thinking about how nice it is when you become friends with the people that run your local stores - they always look after you. They’ve even learnt my order and always ask me how my week has been, and it’s the little conversations like these that seem to make my day. So a big shout-out to the endless amount of friendly cafe workers and of course a big shout-out to almond croissants. I think they are my greatest love.

This week has been a rollercoaster ride for me. I’ve been busy preparing a birthday surprise for my partner, CJ, next month, so that's been taking up a lot of my time. I'm thinking of maybe taking her on a trip or something special like that. I actually love planning things like this, so it's coming along nicely. And I'm a romantic at heart, so I'm really looking forward to it! 😊

I’ve also been catching up on some TV shows that I’ve been wanting to watch and just relaxing in general. I’m watching House of The Dragon, which is really good so far! I’m a Game of Thrones fan, so it’s a real treat for me. Also, I lost my retainers (so silly, I know), so I'm off to get new ones fitted on Sunday!

Lastly, something heartbreaking happened this week. One of my friend's dad passed away suddenly, and it was really hard for her. This event got into me this week and made me realise how unpredictable life is. It can be really short, and we should make the most of it.

This event has made me more grateful for my own life and has inspired me to live it to the fullest. I hope that everyone reading this takes a moment to appreciate their own lives and the people in it. We never know when something might happen to change everything. So, cherish every moment and make the most of it.

How does every week seem busier than the last? This week my house sale went unconditional which is always a bit of a relief. I also found a roommate to live with in Sydney – I know, I’m iffy about it too. They seem lovely but I’ve never had to resort to forced cohabitation due to expenses before. Alas.

Any tips for living with a stranger? I could use them right now.

Oh and last Sunday I held a market stall for my journal! Did it go well? Not particularly – I was tucked away in an area no one really ventured to and it was pouring rain… You live and you learn! At least I got to meet some lovely fellow vendors including a talented tarot card reader set up next to me.

My recommendation for the week is to head to your local pub with some friends, neighbours or family. You don’t even need to drink but it’s great to support local businesses.

Why a pub, you may ask? I saw this video of a stranger helping someone make the first move on his friend/date. Could you imagine telling that one to the grandkids? It’s such a sweet, human moment. Sometimes I really love humanity!

For some reason I got convinced by some of my friends to give 'serious' Pokemon gaming a go. Back in the day, I only played it for fun, not thinking of competing.

So, now I tried the competitive playing simulator (the one similar with the Switch [gaming console] battles without the commitment of spending time on levelling up) and needless to say…I learned that my team is not ideal for competitive battles haha.

This week, I tried something a little different. Does anyone else have those days where everything just feels… Dreary? My nan, who I previously mentioned came over to visit me from the US, is set to head back next week. It has been a lot of fun having her around again, so I’ve been dreading her leaving as I’ll miss her deeply. This has affected my mood a lot and quite honestly, has left me struggling to get out of bed sometimes.

To cope with the separation anxiety, I tried to lift my spirits by listening to music while working, before I sleep, and when I’m doing chores. Of course, I’m doing my best to make the most out of her stay while she’s here too!

But I must say, listening to music is pretty effective. I used to be a huge fan of it and even went as far as composing my own songs. However, I slowly drifted away from the hobby as life in general got more hectic for me.

So members, I highly recommend setting aside some time to do the things you love (or used to love doing). Rekindling old hobbies is one of the best ways to go about bouts of loneliness or sadness.

If you want to listen to my ‘Mood booster’ playlist, you can check it out here:

I’m hoping that some of the songs on here will make someone’s day too!

Speaking of making someone’s day, watch this funny and wholesome prank that I saw on TikTok:

Unfortunately laid low with a bad cold this week. Hoping to be back to normal in the coming week. Seems like the older you get the longer these things last. At least I am still alive and kicking which is great. 😃😃

I had a roller coaster week again. Started Pretty bad/sad for me, with the funeral of a good friend on Tuesday, spending a day in hospital on Wednesday, working with a very depressed client all Thursday afternoon, add to that the bad weather... but on Friday I started listening to Emma Carey's Story on Audible, and suddenly all seemed a lot better. This young woman had a skydiving accident that left her a paraplegic, but her book is soooo inspirational. How good and easy was my life compared to hers? How lucky am I? I can walk, I can do a lot of things many people cant do, things that we take for granted! Ok, after various cancers and 19 operations there are a few things I cannot do, but it s nothing compared to this 20 year old . So today I went fora long walk with my dog, and now we are both sitting on my comfortable couch, enjoying a coffee (me) and a treat (doggie), listening to my birds chatting away, and I am just grateful for everything I still have! I highly recommend that book to everyone!

How nice to read the SDC recap. Makes it feel like you are all family. I visited my real family today and was rewarded with so many lovely hugs from two little grandsons. They always make us feel so very welcome. Then a trip to the local market - didn't really need anything, just fun to browse!
ps Jon - I hope your sore throat gets better soon, and I love my Oral B electric toothbrush too!

I agree with Mfry. We do fel like family & l can add that the people we converse with feel like extended family to me. Thankyou all.

My'n has been an unexciting week with late nights, or is that early mornings to bed because l couldn't sleep. This meant a late rise, feeling inactive & then spending some of the rest of the day catching up on sleep.

I'll need to be better this week with the return to school for students & a resumption of my two mosaic classes, card making & other activities.

Judging by the time some of my postings receive acknowledgement from our editors, around 2 a.m. here or 5 a.m allowing for daylight saving in the 'East', l can only say that you all must work some tirelessly strange hours. Thankyou every person at the pointy end for bringing to us such interesting information every day & every week.

@Noraya this made me want to cry. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all ❤️ and I hope you're doing okay - it sounds like last week was a tough week.

Much like you, I recently discovered Emma Carey's story and I couldn't agree more. She is just remarkable. I think this week I'm going to read her book, I completely forgot she had one coming out! So thank you for sharing this. I think I really needed this recommendation right now, so thank you for taking the time to make it!
