Savvy mum upcycles 'throwaway' bar stools into expensive-looking tall planters: "Best upcycle I have seen in months!"

If you're looking for a planter for your tall plants, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind.

First, you'll want to make sure the planter is, well, tall enough to accommodate your plants. Second, you'll want to make sure the planter has drainage holes to ensure that water doesn’t pool and cause root rot or other nasties. Third, you'll want to choose a planter that's made from a durable material that can withstand the elements.

At the SDC, it goes without saying that we are always looking for ways in which we can cut costs and save money. Therefore, rather than searching for planters at various retail stores, why not just make them on your own?

So if you're looking for a DIY project that checks all the requirements listed above, check out how this thrifty mum repurposed 'throwaway' bar stools into beautiful planters for her front yard.

On an upcycle Facebook group, one mum shared that she had been unable to find suitable planters for her tall plants so she decided to make her own instead.

"I hadn't found anything that I love that didn't cost an arm and a leg," she said. So she decided to repurpose a set of old and worn-out $5 stools by digging into the scrap wood stash.

"I thought that if I flipped them over they might make the perfect frames for pots," she mused. All she had to do to make the tall planters was fill in the gaps with scrap wood and paint the pots black. And the end result was stunning!

Many members of the Facebook group responded positively to the mum's post, with several of them asking for instructions on how she made the tall planters.

In a later conversation, the mum disclosed that she had filled in the legs of the table with plywood before adding cross panels, which, once painted, would function as decorative borders.

After that, she placed the planters in front of her house and positioned her tall pots inside of the planters.

Many homeowners and fellow DIYers on social media commended the mum for the wonderful project and even congratulated her for thinking outside the box.

"They look awesome. And I think better than the cost of buying them at an arm and a leg worth," wrote one woman in the comments. Another added, "This is the best upcycle I have seen in months, well done!"

"That was a really smart thing to come up with. They look just like what you would have bought," said a third.

These planters look so beautiful and elegant! Are you looking to try this DIY project too, members? Let us know how it turns out!

Unfortunately I am far too literal. I have no idea how these people come up with these ideas. To me, old stools are old stools and nothing else. I wish I could be more inventive.
