The holidays are supposed to be a joyful time for families to gather around the dining table to share a scrumptious Christmas meal.
But for many, financial concerns this season means stretching budgets further and looking for additional ways to afford such a meal.
One popular option it seems, particularly for Coles customers, is to utilise their store loyalty cards to cover the costs, as grocery inflation remained elevated. You can read more about this here.
In the past quarter, data has shown that redemption of Flybuys points for Coles purchases has doubled.
As the holiday season puts a strain on most families' budgets, Coles CEO Leah Eckert revealed an increasing trend among consumers.
'Customers are seeking ways to access bonus points for loyalty programs,' she said.
'We know a lot of them will trade in their points for dollars off at Christmas to help pay for Christmas lunch.'
'Our customer research indicates that more customers will be cooking and eating at home this season,’ she continued.
Members who actively use their Flybuys membership have grown by 9.9 per cent, with a 22 per cent rise in shoppers exploiting Flybuys offers for extra points when shopping.
It was also revealed that the most popular Flybuys redemption option is the $10 discount for a future shop for every 2,000 points.
Although shoppers may get better value by converting them into Velocity Points.
'Cost of living is definitely front of mind for all our customers at the moment,' the CEO stated.
'About 90 per cent of Australians are telling us they're already changing their behaviour, and I expect that would continue through to Christmas.'
'We know that the specials program and the loyalty program are really key right now.'
According to Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker, 27 per cent of Australians have said that the cost of groceries is their biggest source of financial stress.
This falls behind the stress brought forth by paying their mortgage and rent (35 per cent).
Furthermore, in a recent study by Finder, Coles ranked as the most expensive for a typical grocery basket.
Despite Flybuys being a key weapon in their competition with Woolworths, Coles is currently losing money running the scheme.
This news comes after Coles announced a significant overhaul of its popular Flybuys loyalty program.
The new initiative offered personalised discounts and free promotions—promising more savings and rewards for shoppers.
Coles customers can now access tailored Flybuys offers through the user-friendly Coles app which allows shoppers to gather more points and makes it easy to take advantage of an array of promotions and discounts on their regular groceries.
