Safety concerns spark urgent recall of BIG W bottles and ALDI ice cream maker

When trying to cool off with water or a homemade frozen treat this summer, the last thing you want is a health risk.

But for owners of 1L water bottles from BIG W or an ice cream maker from ALDI, this has become a chilling reality.

With regards to BIG W, the company has issued an urgent recall of its popular Brilliant Basics 1L Sipper Drink Bottle over serious safety concerns.

According to Product Safety Australia (PSA), the silicone sipper has not been securely attached to some bottles sold between January 3-12, posing a risk of choking, suffocation or even death to young children.

'Our investigations revealed the potential for the sipper to become loose or detached from the bottle,' said a spokesperson from PSA.

'If a young child were to put the detached sipper in their mouth, it could block their airway, preventing them from breathing,’ they added.

The recall affects bottles in pink with purple lids, green with orange lids, and blue with green lids—all with article code 390679.

While convenient for on-the-go hydration, these bottles potentially endanger little ones if sippers detach unexpectedly.

If you purchased one of these bottles, cease usage immediately and return it to your nearest Big W for a full refund.

If you are unable to return the product or have given it away or sold it to someone else, please contact BIG W through this link: https://www.bigw.com.au/help/contact-us.

In similar news, ALDI issued an urgent recall for one of its products, the Ambiano Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker, model number IA5554.

The recall was prompted by concerns that the machine's freezer bowl, which contains a clear-coloured coolant, could potentially leak into the ice cream mixture during the mixing process.

The recall notice has confirmed that the defect has already occurred.

‘There is a risk of serious illness if coolant is consumed,’ it read.

If you own this particular model of ice cream maker sold between December 20 and January 1, it is crucial that you stop using it immediately.

ALDI is urging customers to return the product to their nearest store for a full refund.

If you suspect that you or someone else may have consumed ice cream containing coolant, it is essential to seek immediate medical assistance or contact the Poisons Information Centre on 131 126.

For more information, you can contact ALDI directly on 1300 777 137 from 9 am-4:30 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am-3 pm Saturday, or on the ALDI recall helpline (13 25 34) 8:30 am-5:30 pm Monday to Friday.

Additional information about ALDI recalls can also be found on their website.
