'Ripping us off': Shopper left fuming after discovering 'underweight' meat purchase

It's no wonder that as the cost of living increases, ordinary Australians are keeping a tight eye on food prices and expecting better bang for their buck. Every dollar counts, and so does every gram!

That's why it's not hard to imagine just how unhappy this Woolworths customer was when she realised the package of meat she recently bought weighed far less than she expected.

In a scathing (and now-deleted) post on the Woolworths official Facebook page, the outraged shopper posted a photo showing two pieces of rump steak that, according to her digital scale at home, only weighed a combined 213 grams instead of the 404 grams they were supposed to be.

'Hey Woolworths, what's the deal here?' she wrote in the caption, adding: 'As if we don't notice inflation enough with a standard shop, you're now ripping us off.'

According to the shopper, she wouldn't have made a big deal out of it if only a few grams were missing, but when nearly half of the advertised weight was gone, it was unfair to the customers who didn't know they were not getting their money's worth.

The woman's post on social media garnered a lot of attention from many of her fellow Woolies shoppers, several of whom commented and said they knew how frustrating her situation was. Others were also very understanding and felt the same way.

'Omg, that is infuriating!' one user wrote in the comments, with a few others sharing similar sentiments.

Even though soak pads are typically included in the weight advertised, another user pointed out that it is still quite awful to have about half of the package gone. In response, the woman said that there were no soak pads in the steak packaging.

Shoppers have previously complained about the weight of Woolworths meat goods, so this woman is not the first to have an issue with the weight of her purchase.

Just earlier this year, we wrote about another shopper who was upset that her Woolies mince was 132 grams lighter than what was stated on the packaging. That's quite a huge difference!

As soon as the woman posted her complaint on Woolworths' Facebook page, a representative apologised and assured her that she could bring back the item for a complete refund or replacement.

'We're disappointed to see this. This will be escalated to our products team so they are aware and can investigate the issue,' the spokesperson commented in response.

'Please know that we have a Fresh or Free guarantee, so if you're ever unsatisfied, you may take the product packaging along with your receipt back to our service desk, and our lovely team will cheerfully provide you with a full refund and replacement.'

Inflation's effect on commodity prices is being felt by everyone, and we are no exception; as a result, we all need to be more mindful and selective in our purchases.

... And that's not all - for most supermarkets; not just Woolies.
There is a lot of moisture with the meat; particularly with frozen items.
One can lose up to half the weight when cooking.

I wonder how often the Municipal or State "Weights & Measures" Departments actually check to see that fruit and meat packaging actually reflects the advertised products? Scales nearby could be a good idea??

Has everyone noticed that prices have also been hiked of late only to be reduced as a 'special' or 'discount', but are still much more than the original price. EG: St Woolies Mainland 375g soft butter was always $5, then suddenly selling for $7 after supposedly being dropped from $7.30, per the rag.

Why fudge the weight when the price is so readily and easily increased?

What a rip off!!!

some big stores and butchers inject water into their products to increase the weight
That's why I switched to a butcher trying to fry mince for a bolognese sauce is impossible from any supermarket mince the mince just stews you do not get the same flavour from stewed mince that you do from fried mince I asked my butcher if his mince was infused with water he said no took the mince home and it was perfect

Woolies - mince on several occasions but it has only been a few grams equating to about 1 teaspoon but even then if every package of mince they sold was only a teaspoon short of product that could add up to a lot of mince and money. Also legally the contents should weight what they say on the packet or more but never less and hefty fines can happen if found guilty of selling underweight product.

I look for meat that suits my preferences (even thickness, amount of fat, how much it needs trimming) but had assumed that the big chains would be making sure their weights were correct. I try to consume an amount of protein per day recommended by my dietician and certainly, a weight decrease of these magnitudes would impact not only my pocket, but my efforts to maintain optimal health in my “golden years”.

Nearly all of the pre packed foods especially meat now have an e next to the weight this apparently tells you it is an approximate weight, look at eggs they are no longer 70g each egg the total carton weight is what you get, Masterfoods sauce, bottled ginger there are a lot now. This lets them get away with the under weight, so if you want the proper weight look for the e next to the weight, if it is there don't buy, just get the product that has a proper weight no e.
