Mmm... Can think of several answers to this one. From the plant world one has to consider the pine tree. From the animal kingdom both the porcupine and the hedgehog suggest themselves. However, I'm pretty sure that both porcupine's and hedgehog's spikes are known as quills so I have too go with:
