I think it is a thousand
 
The letter A does not appear in any number from zero to 999
Although the word AND appears quite a lot, it is not part of the number.
E.G. 101 is nowadays said One Hundred AND one.
This is in actual fact One Hundred One (Or One-O-One)
Therefore the first appearance of an A is in One Thousand (1000)
