Ten pears hanging high, ten men come passing by. Each took a pear and left nine hanging there. How could that be?

EACH is the name of one of the 10 men and he's the only one who took a pear.
 
"Each" was the name of one of the ten men - the only one to take a pear.

Each was the name of the man that took the pear. The others didn’t any pears. Or, one man took the pear and was handed one by one to all the other men
