19 pears. The 9 were hidden by the leaves and they were only interested in the higher ones.

The name of the man that took a pear was Each and left nine pears hanging.
 
The first could take one, and the next (being shorter) takes that pear from the first man, then the next, being shorter, takes ...
Of course, if the horse's name is "Friday" and the rider is named "Each" ... :)
