Remember being paid by cash?

Remember being paid by cash every week or fortnight? Aussies lined up eagerly for that little brown envelope filled with their hard-earned money. There were no bank transfers, just the satisfaction of holding that crisp dollar. Do you still remember your first pay? Share your memories in the comments below.

I remember being required to stuff the little brown envelopes one-by-one, alongside an employee of Mayne Nickless, as 300+ of my fellow staff stood waiting for their turn to receive their pay.

I also remember the chaos that occurred when the money available for the last envelope (my own) was insufficient.

I have to admit that I was greatly relieved when I was told that I would never have to do that again, as the payments were going to be made directly into their bank accounts.

Now I wish that change never happened.

Was a pay clerk for several different places in the hay day.
Payday was always hectic, but so enjoyed greeting everyone in the company on those day. And if there were any problems, I would have it fixed before their shift was over so they always when home with the correct pay.

I started work in 1962 and never ever had my salary paid in cash, always to a bank account, including when arriving from France in Sydney in1965. But my husband working for Australians had a "pay packet" , it amused us no end that he was not allowed to have his salary transferred to a bank account (his co workers explained to him it was very good, that way the wife would never know how much they earned. We learned later that some men actually did show their payslip to their wife)

I have always found it strange when I hear or read that men hid their pay from their wife. You married this person to share your life with and you then go an hid things from them. All that tells me is you don't really love or trust them, so why did you marry in the first place.
