Red rattlers

Who remembers riding in a tait red rattler carriage on their way to the city? Back then, the train ride was simple, with no fancy amenities like padded seats or air conditioning. No phones in sight- It was just you and your fellow commuters buried in newspapers, rattling along the tracks to your destination. Do you remember when your journey looked like this?

Well, I think this was the inter urban train…going to Newcastle, Wollongong, and Katoomba.
It has pictures, and luggage rack and possibly toilets.

Red rattlers were more basic…where you could lean out the door when it was hot..and just rows of seats.

Melbourne 1958!!

Definitely part of my growing up in Melbourne.
There were no windows, ie, no glass just shutters. On hot days, the shutters were fully opened and you could poke your head right out.
You’d end up at your destination covered in grime and grit, your hair was a mess, but oh boy, the fun!
Oh, the doors often just flew open while you were belting along, yahooing out the window opening!

Perth trains had spacious, padded seats, and a trip into the city was an exciting highlight of visiting from the country.
Sydney trains stopped for several minutes, just out of the city, to wait their turn. I don't remember if they had nice seats.
