Radio host's on-air meltdown sparks outrage among sport fans! What did he say?

As society continues to change, we have seen significant strides towards gender equality and respect in sport.

However, there are still instances that remind us that we still have a long way to go.

A radio host's recent remark was a stark example of this ongoing battle against sexism, particularly in women's sport.

Triple M radio host Marty Sheargold went under fire for his derogatory comments about the Australian women's national soccer team, the Matildas.

The Matildas recently played in the SheBelieves Cup, an invitational football tournament with teams all over the world.

The Matildas, who have captured the hearts of sports fans across the nation with their skill and determination, were subjected to Sheargold's belittling comparison.

Marty Sheargold went on a lengthy tirade against The Matildas, Australia's women's football team, Image Credits: Instagram/The Matildas, Radio Info AU

'There's something wrong with the Matildas,' Sheargold prefaced.

'You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls.'

'All the infighting and all the friendship issues, "The coach hates me, and I hate b***** training and Michelle's being a b****,"' Sheargold continued.

Yet, his comments did not stop there.

While his co-hosts continued steering the topic back to the sport, Sheargold continued to make crude remarks.

'Now I'm sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that's what I think of it, so you can stick it up your a***,' he stated.

Sheargold went on to make a crude joke about Aussie football athlete Sam Kerr and her partner, Kristie Mewis.

'Oh, do they play the same position?' Sheargold asked.

As his co-hosts eventually discussed the Women's Asian Cup next year, he left another questionable remark about the sport.

'Oh god, the Asian Cup. I'd rather hammer a nail through the head of my p**** than watch that.'

'Got any men's sport?' Sheargold asked in conclusion.

His remarks were made live on The Marty Sheargold Show and sparked outrage among listeners, athletes, and the sport community.

Social media users condemned Sheargold's outburst on the broadcast.

'Disgusting. Sheargold is a piece of s*** and should be sacked,' a comment read.

'"Sorry you took offence at my poor attempt at comedy" is not an apology,' another comment stated.

'It is disgraceful that Triple M still employs Marty Sheargold after his misogynistic rant.'

'His sexist and homophobia shouldn't be allowed airtime in 2025,' a third said.

Public figures and female athletes also weighed in on the situation.

Olympic hockey player Rosie Malone expressed her disbelief and concern for the young girls who might have heard Sheargold's comments.

'I honestly don't know what is wrong with the world,' she said in a video posted online.

'I heard this on the radio yesterday on the way to training, and all I could think about was the young girls sitting in the car with their parents, maybe on the way to or from their training sessions, hearing this.'

'I'm sure many of them would have been hurt and confused.'

As his statement received backlash, Sheargold immediately apologised online.

'Any comedy, including mine, can miss the mark sometimes. I can see why people may have taken offence to my comments regarding the Matildas,' Sheargold stated.

'I sincerely apologise.'

Triple M also issued an apology and stated that Sheargold's comments did not align with their values.

However, many Triple M listeners still believed that the station should have axed Sheargold.

This incident was a stark reminder of the sexism that still permeates society.

It also underscored the importance of standing up against such behaviour from public figures.

The Matildas, like any other Aussie athletes and teams, deserve to be celebrated for their achievements and treated with the same respect as their male counterparts.
Key Takeaways

It is getting to the point where a person will not be able state their opinion on anything I personally don't agree with him but he should be entitled to his opinion and if it was said in jest then there is absolutely no issue at all
He is claiming ‘jest’ now but that is after the event. His microphone should have been cut off as soon as he started his rant. No excuses for his rant at all

So over women crying “unfair, sexiest, etc”. If you want to be treated equally - then act equally and stop pulling the misogynistic card every time a male says he doesn’t like watching women play rather than men playing. I’m a 70 year old female and I much prefer watching men play than women in some sports. That does not mean I am disrespecting women. As far as Sam Kerr and her fiancé’s behavior - I don’t like it any more than I like the antics of some NRL players. Bad behavior is simply bad behavior and nothing to do with the sex of those involved. I suggest everyone watches whichever sport they enjoy and is entitled to their opinion of those they don’t.
Well said. Too many have been brainwashed by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion B and all the other BS we are being fed. I thought he went a little too far but remember he is a shock comedian after all. Here is the a question for you all to ponder. Was Kerr a good Role model for her young fans? If not, then she should have got the same treatment as players involved in the ball tampering incident when;
a. Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera using sandpaper to roughen the ball.
b. Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were also found to be involved.
c. All three players received significant sanctions from Cricket Australia.
Is she going to pay for her indiscretions? Not even a slap on the wrist IMHO. Well written Inot 54!!

He was only saying what most people have been thinking. All the people making comments about this on the media pages on FB have mainly agreed with him. 🙂Obviously just some women have disagreed.

I don't know who started this nonsense about women playing men's games anyway?🙄 They're not even that good at it.

Can only have an opinion if everyone agrees with it. 🙄

for gods sake he is A COMEDIAN. B A STIRRER. And i agree with him look at the behavior of Sam Kerr . Spoilt delicate little flowers, no need to be eternally outraged. If it was said about men there would be nothing to see here all washed under the carpet
If it was about the rapist footballers then YES IT WOULD ALL BE WASHED UNDER THE CARPET AND MOTHING TO SEE HERE

I agree, but notice the 80 percent swing even our our old fuddies site,Women in sport eerrhh, they should stick to netball perhaps??Cooking or sewing classes?? Excuses for this man's (used loosely)
words and behaviour. It did not stop at just one, just more and more innuendo and criticism. How sad, hope my little grandaughters just starting school feel they can play soccer or any other sport they wish as they grow up and are not undermined or insulted for their choice in sport.
I found nothing funny about anything this so called radio comedian had to say, just embarrassed for him.

I was surprised (actually I was gob-smacked) that Sam Kerr was not charged. She is NOT a role model for her team mates or for Australia. The video in the police station clearly shows her abusing the officer, using foul language and referring to him as ‘white’. If he was a coloured man and she was white her comment of him being perhaps ‘black’ would have been clear abuse, so why was she not charged for her comment of him being ‘white’?

I would have been 100% OK with a charge against her for those two incidents alone as well as the judge making her pay full reparation for what damage she or her partner did to the cab, cleaning charges for any vomiting and found language there as well. Too many ‘precious’ individuals who think they are above others because their sport etc has made them a ‘name’ in Australia.

With regard to the topic here there are a lot of questions that need answers, shock comedian or not.

PS veggie, what did he say about endometriosis???Him having a womb and all!!
He made a statement that endometriosis was a fake disease.

Sheargold deserves a double dose of prostate cancer and see if THAT is fake or not! Quoted from Channel 9 News:-

A clip from Sheargold's radio show yesterday surfaced online, where he made comments mocking reproductive health issues after he borrowed a "period heat pack" to use on his sore back.
"God don't ladies carry on, Jesus Christ there is no end of it," Sheargold said.
"Endometriosis, and this is controversial," Sheargold said, as his co-host could be heard saying "don't say it".
"No, I am going to say it. It's controversial. It's made up."

Agree with you completely.

Has this idiot personally lived through morning sickness, labour and birth of a child, and endometriosis? NO, so since he hasn’t he should shut his mouth because he knows not an iota of what some women have to endure. Some women sail through it, others have one hell of a time. I, personally, had morning sickness for a full 7 months with my first child & my doctor told me I’d have to be admitted to hospital if it didn’t stop (probably scared me then and I got better the last 2 months). Every single woman goes through pregnancy and birth differently, while most men just have the pleasure of the first act.

So it’s about time this moron for a man shut his mouth and in future think before he opens it again. Apologies after opening a stupid, vulgar mouth are just superficial.

Was it said in jest? No, it was not - check out the quote in Veggiepatch’s comment further on and the actual words quoted in the Channel Nine report. This moron said, to a person who was trying to stop him, that he was going to continue what he was saying, so it is not in jest AT ALL. He is, pure and simple, a VULGAR MORON who has no respect for the opposite sex and perhaps even men, but most of all he has no self respect either.

We all have our opinions of people and issues in this world but expressing them out loud is where the line needs to be drawn sometimes and when it is vulgar that can and should be left in one’s own home.

As a woman that had to have a total hysterectomy at 40 years of age and HRT replacement therapy ever since, because of the agony experienced since the age of 16 with this illness,I can't believe their ate such ignorant p....s out there sprouting this garbage!!!
Just as well I had had my family by then.
I know we're he should stick his period heat pad...down his obnoxious throat....along with his 2 x prostate cancer...at the end stage.
