Professional cleaner points out the ONE spot in our homes that most of us don’t clean – and the best way to leave it spotless

When cleaning, most of us tend to have our full attention on tackling greasy ovens, stinky toilets, stained clothes or rugs, and dusty furniture items – completely forgetting to go over one spot in our homes that also needs some TLC. Funnily enough, the commonly missed spot is in plain sight… Walls!

A professional cleaner said that people should be giving their walls a thorough cleaning every six months and revealed the best way to rid them of accumulated pollen, dust, and mould.

Kacie Stephens, who is the owner of The Big Clean Co, recently shared a video on TikTok demonstrating how to clean walls efficiently.

The cleaning expert begins by wiping down an entire wall with a long-armed duster to remove cobwebs and dirt. Then, she fills a sink with water before pouring a generous amount of multi-purpose cleaner in and soaking her window cleaner in the mixture.

Kacie proceeds by scrubbing the entire wall with the handy window cleaner, working from top to bottom to ensure that she doesn’t miss a spot. Finally, she uses a piece of cloth and Gumption paste to banish stubborn marks and scuffs.

“I make it look easy but it's one of the toughest jobs for a cleaner’s body,” she said.

Plenty of users suggested that she should opt for a ‘magic eraser’ instead to remove tough scuff marks but Kacie was quick to explain why she doesn’t trust the cleaning item.

“Wow, I've never seen it done this way before. I use a magic eraser dipped in water and wipe off the marks. Then, I go over the walls with a damp cloth.” commented one person.

“Doctor Power Magic Eraser works for any marks.” another chimed, to which Kacie responded: “Be very careful with using a magic eraser to clean your walls – they, more often than not, leave permanent damage to the finish of the paint,”

A regretful homeowner confirmed Kacie’s warning, saying: “I can confirm [that using a magic eraser to clean walls is counter-productive]. We’re due for a repaint anyway but learned from my mistake.”

Another cleaner shared that she follows a similar method but uses a mop instead of a window washer.

Several users on Reddit admitted to 'never' cleaning their walls, much to others' disgust.

“I have never done anything more than a spot clean. If I see some fingerprints or whatever, I wipe them. Simple.”' one woman wrote.

“I didn't realise it was a thing until I kept getting allergies. My mum asked me when I last cleaned my walls. It has made a huge difference.” chimed another.

“I deep clean my whole house once a month and that includes wiping all the walls down. I only do it so often because we have pets inside.” a third explained, while a fourth said: “I do it at the change of each season.”

“I tend to do it when I move my furniture around which is three times a year to make the most of the seasons.” added one more.

According to Rescue My Time Cleaning Service, cleaning your walls is a must as doing so helps get rid of harmful mould and contributes to overall better air quality.

“Mould and mildew can grow on walls if they’re not kept clean, especially in damp areas such as bathrooms. Regular cleaning can help prevent these harmful growths from taking hold,”

“Prolonged exposure to mould can result in a number of health complications, so it’s worth preventing it from growing at all,”

“Dust and other particles that build up on walls can also contribute to poor air quality. By keeping them clean you’re also helping to improve your family’s health,” they added.

My COPD affected lungs very quickly let me know how often people clean their walls. I can get pretty breatless, pretty quickly in some people's houses and you can guarantee it's because they don't clean their walls often enough. Mine get a thorough wash down every 8 weeks and that keeps me healthy.
