Poll: Do you think the sentiment of respecting your elders has been lost on the new generation?

Happy Sunday, members!

We have something new for you today: a poll!

We love reading your comments and emails and today we’re looking for your thoughts on this generation of teenagers. This topic has been on our mind for a while but this shocking story of a ‘teenage orgy in Westfield’ and the increasing disrespect towards Remembrance Day really tipped the scale.

Our question to you is: Do you think the sentiment of respecting your elders has been lost on the new generation?

You can vote above but feel free to comment and explain your choice!

I’ve noticed as I got older (now 72) that the younger generation think of us as pretty useless in society, to the point of being isolated from discussions and socialising. It seems to me that we are looked on as not knowing anything worthwhile.

I have always said that respect is s dual edged sword. If you don't give it, you will not get it in return. I have and always will, respected my elders however if anyone, of any age disrespects me, then it is a different ball game. My motto in life and always has been "if you wouldn't like it done or said to you, don't do or say it to anyone else", I call that my religion.

I've always tried to teach my kids respect, which teaching respect covers a lot of things

Respect and trust us as your parents

Respect your siblings ...this includes ask them when you want to use what is theirs , I instilled this from when they were young.

Don't do unto others what you don't want done to you.

We have to teach our kids respect but they have to also be respected. I taught my kids to be respectful to their elders but in return those elders also needed to respect my kids.

I sincerely believe once the kids go off to high school that's where the battle begins. Your kids have to be strong enough to stand on their own and do what is right and not be tempted by others.

I have to say my last 3 boys went to Marrist College and every time I went to the school never did I come across disrespectful boys.
Never heard swearing. They were always neatly dressed
They made good friends and even today when their friends come here the respect they show is incredible

Yet my youngest two girls wanted to go to the local high school and gosh every time I went there , you heard kids swearing , girls full of make up. My daughter said you couldn't use the toilet as they were full of kids smoking. She said that kids made out at the back of the school. And this school is not in a bad area

My daughter who is a teacher , said I was wasting my money sending the boys to Marrist , that public schools are good until she was sent to a catholic school and she saw a difference , she said it amazed her not only were the students respectful the teachers were less stressful and even the parents were more approachable.

Don't get me wrong there is good and bad everywhere but my family as a parent and as a teacher has seen a difference in schools

I feel it all comes back to the parents and what they teach their children from a young age. The lack of respect towards us as we age is becoming more common with some of the younger generation. I am blessed that my young family members and friend's family members always treat me with respect. However, more and more people where I live who are coming into the units are disrespecting the older tenants, very sad indeed, but it all comes back to upbringing.

Exactly I get this attitude all the time as I love to mix and talk to all ages it is very disappointing

My personal experience with one of my children shows he has no respect for me. He was bought up showing how important it is to always show respect to all people. I have always been there for him in many ways, sickness, help when twins were born (every night on my way home from work) breakup of marriage particularly, I was there when he went into deep depression & helped him thru it, but, when he met his current partner it all stopped & he never comes to my house, apparently always ‘too busy’. I go to his house every fortnight for dinner, only way I get to see my grandsons, it breaks my heart.

I work in aged care as a Volunteer & I Love spending time with the Elderly & hearing about their life. I'm 64 myself & I see disrespect towards the Elderly while out in the public. I've even had young ones treat me bad to while out shopping. Only thing is I stand up for myself but people older than me can't. It saddens me to see this happen in this day & age. My father taught me respect & said 'Treat people how you want to be treated. And I always have. 💖❤️🌹

I’m 72 born in the fifties I know I am definitely not alone when I say the majority of youth today have very little respect for the older generation but the thing is it’s the bubble wrap society we live in shoes to blame for that oh yes that would be the politically correct crap that has been gradually dished out over the past 25 years or so of course there are exceptions thank goodness but they are thin on the ground so much so that when you meet one you are totally inspired of times gone by

As a younger member of the group, I see the disrespect from younger people towards elderly people and it sickens me. It’s so bad that every time I read or see a younger person respecting them, it touches me to my core! I feel it’s wrong to have to feel like that because when I was growing up, if you didn’t respect your elders omg look out. It’s part of my nature now. Most kids these days don’t even respect their parents. At 45, I still worry what my folks would say about some decisions I make, before I make them 😂

Todays parents tend to teach their children to alway win, that they are the best at everything. Not care what people think, that they are going to change the world.
I think they should teach them to respect, have some humility and gain some empathy.

I think one major contribution is the accelerated advancement in technology that has “transferred” knowledge-power to younger generations, making many “swell headed”.
The other is a loss of discipline in schools, unfortunately, attributed to the greying boundary between discipline and child-abuse.

I am an 85 year old grandmother and find teenagers tend to ignore your presence whereas both men and women of middle years are very helpful. I also find that if you smile almost everyone smiles back. I agree respect should be taught at home and by example.
I don't think young people always mean to be disrespectful, they are so absorbed in their own lives that we "oldies" are irrelevant to them.
Anyway, try to remember that we often get back, in life, what we put in.
