The mysterious disappearance of a beloved Channel 10 reporter and his Qantas worker partner has taken a new twist, as police reveal they are now searching for a third man in connection to the case.
The investigation has seen the home of a New South Wales Police officer searched, raising more questions than answers.
Jesse Baird, 26, a former reporter for Channel 10, and his partner, Luke Davies, 29, a Qantas employee, vanished under suspicious circumstances.
The case took a chilling turn when the couple's belongings were found discarded in a skip bin in Cronulla, Sydney, about 11 AM on Wednesday, 21 February—three days after Davies was last seen in Paddington.
The latest development in this mystery unfolded late Thursday night, 22 February, when police executed a search warrant at a home in Balmain's Waite Avenue.
The property belonged to a New South Wales (NSW) police officer who had previously been in a relationship with Baird. A number of items were seized during the search, but police have yet to reveal their significance.
The NSW Police issued a statement on Thursday, 22 February, confirming they were attempting to locate a man they believed could assist with their investigation.
They also stated that detectives would ‘continue to look at all past relationships and associations’ of the missing men.
The initial alarm was raised when an employee of a nearby venue found the couple's belongings while disposing of rubbish.
They found bloodied clothing, a mobile phone, credit cards, and car keys dumped in the bin and reported it to the police.
It has not yet been established who the mobile phone belongs to.
The discovery led police to a home on Brown Street in Paddington at about 1 PM, where a crime scene was immediately established.
Inside, they found upturned furniture and large amounts of blood, a grim scene that Detective Superintendent Jodi Radmore confirmed could be consistent with a fatality.
Despite the grim discoveries, the whereabouts of Davies remain unknown. Police visited his home in Waterloo but found no trace of him.
Superintendent Radmore stated that detectives were not ruling out any lines of inquiry as the investigation continues.
'We do believe from the crime scene at Paddington and from the property that was located at Cronulla that there has been some sort of incident that has more than likely occurred at the Paddington address,' she told reporters.
‘Witnesses described a verbal argument, but it wasn’t reported to police at the time, it was only reported to police yesterday during the canvas (of neighbours).’
The police have expressed grave concerns for the safety of both men. Two cars have been seized from the Paddington property and are yet to be forensically tested.
Detectives are also investigating whether any transactions have been made on either of the men's credit cards since their disappearance.
Baird is said to have Caucasian appearance, between 180cm to 185cm tall, have a muscular build, and have brown hair and brown eyes.
Davies is also described as Caucasian, standing between 170cm to 175cm tall, with a medium build, and sporting brown hair and brown eyes.
The police are appealing for anyone with information about Mr Davies’ whereabouts–or who may have information relevant to the investigation–to contact Waverley Police or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
As the search for Jesse Baird and Luke Davies continues, our thoughts are with their friends and family during this difficult time. We can only hope the ongoing investigation will provide some answers and bring those responsible to justice.
