Phone Boxes Of Yesteryear

I remember using these phone boxes when I was a school kid. Local calls cost
three pennies, and they had a return button to eject the coins if the call wasn’t connected.
A joke going around at the time was, if
you were in trouble and you needed a
policeman, all you had to do was press the eject button, and out would come three coppers!IMG_7727.jpeg

When we first had a public phone in Bexley North it consisted of the top half of the booth on a pole. I wonder if this was to make sure calls were sharp and to the point especially on a cold winters night.
