PayPal Call Scam​

In light of our recent Paypal invoice scam article, member Bassia reached out to update on us another Paypal scam doing the rounds.

'I received a phone call from a lady claiming to be from PayPal, I insisted that I haven’t used PayPal ever since it was established. The credit card that it was connected to is no longer current as I was scammed out of all my Super, savings and available credit. No one knows the new one except me and my bank.'

'She insisted that someone was trying to access my account and they have blocked it they wasted an hour of my time. Asked me to fill out a form with all my details including which bank and my current credit card number and my driver's licence. She gave me her name and PayPal employee number. Then she transferred me to her manager, who then asked me to go into eBay as they needed to block access to the person trying to gain access. When the man told me a different amount that was trying to be accessed from my credit card, then I knew something was amiss so I told him that I would be ringing my bank and cancelling my current credit card as they had all the details in order to make purchases.'

'I hung up and I did exactly that I rang my bank and cancelled that credit card cause I didn’t want them getting access to any funds that I had available. These people are the lowest form of life to be targeting seniors. From now on, I will never answer a call if I don’t recognise the number, if someone wants to talk to me, they can leave a message on my voicemail. I’m so sick of being targeted by these scamming monsters.'

Member Bassia did exactly the right thing by terminating the call and reaching out to the bank directly.

This scam sounds like quite a convincing one, so be on the lookout!

I had an email today warning me that my MacAfee virus protection was about to run out and I needed to do something about it at once. To be honest, I didn’t read any further, just deleted it, since I don’t use MacAfee.

I received a phone call today, claiming to be from Suncorp Bank. There are no branches in the state where I live, and I have NEVER had a bank account with Suncorp, or an insurance policy either. I hung up. The phone number was SPOOFED from a real Suncorp number, used in a branch in NSW. (Not where I am) I know that, because I phoned the national head office number in Brisbane and verified that. SPOOFING is when somebody is able to pretend they are calling from a specific number. I had an attempt made against me in May 2022 when the pretender claimed he was with AMP Bank. Again, I have never had any business dealings for any purpose with AMP. The caller today, male, had an English accent, same as last year.
Be careful everyone. They will try anything to steal your money. We are constantly bombarded with stories of people who have been caught out by these criminals.

I am getting calls almost daily from some automated caller supposedly from PayPal wanting to discuss my “recent” transactions…. I hang up and block that number. Each one has been different, from WA , VIC, NSW….

I had an email today warning me that my MacAfee virus protection was about to run out and I needed to do something about it at once. To be honest, I didn’t read any further, just deleted it, since I don’t use MacAfee.

Lately I received at least 5 emails a day saying my McFee has expired, and I have been infected with at least 5 viruses. I do use McFee, and I know when their communication is for real, and not all these weird names and email addresses {they are always the first things I check out}. It seems I have also won heaps of tools from Bunnings and also phones.

far to many to recall. I now wait for the answering machine to take over and when they do not leave a message i block them. love it.

My son received a phone call supposedly from his bank - supposedly from the security dept on a Sunday. They stated that someone was trying to take $ from his account & he needed to change the BSB as well as his account no. He led them on a bit talking about security. They asked how many accounts he had to which he replied 11 - they said that was right. Then they asked how much he had in each account - he said nothing in 10 accounts & half a mill in one - they said that was right. He laughed & hung up on them.

Been getting that email for ages never subscribed to MacAfee so deleted it straight away. The first time I received one emailed I them back no such email address so now just delete

The best thing I found to protect us was to make sure my protection package is up to date, which it is. Also we have taken advantage of our Trend Micro account having the ability to cover an additional 6 items as well as the main computer.
So, we have protection on main computer, both mobile phones, 1 tablet and room for 3 more when we need it.
I have received a few alerts warning me of suspicious SMS messages and I always open my online banking account using Trend as a piggy back rather than going straight through my main frame log in.
So far, so good. I just love getting those warnings and notices of blocked sites. Makes my anti scammer heart sing.

There is also the mygov account texts advising about a refund. Dont click on anything. They sent me a message on my number that nonone would have so new it was a scam
