Passenger’s ‘revolting’ act on board a Jetstar flight leaves families horrified

Air travel can be stressful enough without the added horror of witnessing a fellow passenger's appalling behaviour.

Unfortunately for families on a certain Jetstar flight, their journey was marred by an incident that left many in disbelief and disgust.

In an act that has been widely condemned, a 52-year-old man, later identified as Jason Rangi, committed what other passengers described as a 'hideous and despicable' act during a flight from Gold Coast to Melbourne.

The incident happened on December 18, when he was spotted vaping by flight attendants who asked him to stop.

In response, Rangi exposed himself in the cabin and proceeded to urinate on the empty seats nearby.

This behaviour horrified passengers and crew alike, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.

In Southport Magistrates Court, Rangi pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the incident.

The magistrate, Ms Pamela Dowse, addressed the severity of Rangi's actions, saying: ‘My God, Mr Rangi, your behaviour is despicable—shameful in the extreme, disrespectful, inconsiderate and ugly.’

‘(It's) revolting, really revolting. Why should everyone else have to put up with that?' she added.

The court heard that Rangi's life had been marred by struggles with alcohol abuse, which began after he became addicted to painkillers following a car accident.

His defence lawyer, Joanna McNae, highlighted his current circumstances, noting that he is homeless and unemployed but is actively seeking rehabilitation to break the 'vicious cycle' he is caught in.

‘He is someone who needs assistance and he certainly accepts that,’ McNae reportedly said.

The magistrate sentenced Rangi to one-month imprisonment, suspended for six months, and imposed a fine of $1,000.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commander Superintendent at Gold Coast Airport, Josh Kinghorn, expressed his revulsion at the incident.

He stated: ‘AFP has zero tolerance for bad behaviour at airports and this case is an example of how one person's abhorrent actions have a direct impact on those around them.’

‘Smoking a vape and urinating on a seat is not only repugnant but also poses a severe risk to the safety and comfort of passengers.’

‘Such despicable actions will never be tolerated, and we will ensure appropriate measures are taken to hold the individual accountable for the appalling conduct,’ he added.

I’m getting a bit tired of the excuses. Thousands of people suffer much worse trauma and don’t find it necessary to behave this way. To me, this behaviour screams entitlement and arrogance. This is inbred.

And if he’s homeless, how can he afford to fly from the Gold Coast to Melbourne and use vapes?

I agree with Joydie - he and his lawyer are just making excuses for his nasty behaviour.

Well put Joydie. Added to that this behaviour has to be stamped out. Any damage or cost for repairs/cleaning should come out of their pocket. If he cannot pay it should be 1 days jail for every dollar it costs.
I bet if he had done that in a judges house he would have been locked away for months.

Exactly..... how can he afford the ticket... unless someone paid for it.

I am getting tired of people being sentenced and then suspended. Why not jail all of them. I know we don't have enough jails but where is the deterrent. And I agree with Joydie as well.
Deport them in chains as convicts to Merrie Englande to set up a colony so that the French can't claim the place.............

All the morons doing the wrong thing and then getting let off because they have brain and mind problems. This is a BAD EXCUSE for doing the wrong thing like killing someone and then getting off because they are not the FULL QUID. Most people ask for help when this problem occurs in their life. Lock them up for life.

So agree with Joydie. Sob story means you can do what you like and get away with it.
Though tbf the mental health system is rubbish and it is not always easy to get help, but there is still no need for this sort of rot.
