Passenger’s ‘revolting’ act on board a Jetstar flight leaves families horrified
Air travel can be stressful enough without the added horror of witnessing a fellow passenger's appalling behaviour.
Unfortunately for families on a certain Jetstar flight, their journey was marred by an incident that left many in disbelief and disgust.
In an act that has been widely condemned, a 52-year-old man, later identified as Jason Rangi, committed what other passengers described as a 'hideous and despicable' act during a flight from Gold Coast to Melbourne.
The incident happened on December 18, when he was spotted vaping by flight attendants who asked him to stop.
In response, Rangi exposed himself in the cabin and proceeded to urinate on the empty seats nearby.
This behaviour horrified passengers and crew alike, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.
In Southport Magistrates Court, Rangi pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the incident.
The magistrate, Ms Pamela Dowse, addressed the severity of Rangi's actions, saying: ‘My God, Mr Rangi, your behaviour is despicable—shameful in the extreme, disrespectful, inconsiderate and ugly.’
‘(It's) revolting, really revolting. Why should everyone else have to put up with that?' she added.
The court heard that Rangi's life had been marred by struggles with alcohol abuse, which began after he became addicted to painkillers following a car accident.
His defence lawyer, Joanna McNae, highlighted his current circumstances, noting that he is homeless and unemployed but is actively seeking rehabilitation to break the 'vicious cycle' he is caught in.
‘He is someone who needs assistance and he certainly accepts that,’ McNae reportedly said.
The magistrate sentenced Rangi to one-month imprisonment, suspended for six months, and imposed a fine of $1,000.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commander Superintendent at Gold Coast Airport, Josh Kinghorn, expressed his revulsion at the incident.
He stated: ‘AFP has zero tolerance for bad behaviour at airports and this case is an example of how one person's abhorrent actions have a direct impact on those around them.’
‘Smoking a vape and urinating on a seat is not only repugnant but also poses a severe risk to the safety and comfort of passengers.’
‘Such despicable actions will never be tolerated, and we will ensure appropriate measures are taken to hold the individual accountable for the appalling conduct,’ he added.
