A Melbourne pubgoer was recently met with a surprising and rude response on their receipt after requesting a simple change to their drink. This incident ignited an online debate when the customer shared a photo of their receipt from the Cornish Arms in Brunswick, Melbourne, on social media.
The $222.07 receipt dishes out a message in response to a request for ice in their drinks. Underneath an order of a glass of Terre Forti Pinot Grigio, the receipt read: 'Ice in it f***ing bogans'. Another order of the same wine and a glass of prosecco were also listed with 'ice in it'. The message was presumably a note left for the bartender.
Users on social media are outraged by the 'rude' message left for the customer. Some defended the customer for requesting ice in their wine.
'It’s actually meant to be drunk around 10-13 degrees, not the sweltering 25-35+ degrees we get,' one user explained.
Another user commented, 'At the end of the day, doesn’t matter what’s “expected” or “appropriate”. The customer has paid for it and can drink it however they like.'
Others called the note a 'funny mistake' and urged the customer to find the humour in it, while one person joked about the group’s 'other menu alterations', such as no dressing on the salad and extra gravy.
The pub confirmed it had received a complaint from the customer days after the incident. A spokesperson for the Cornish Arms said 'staff were spoken to and reminded of their workplace responsibilities', and the junior staff member was 'very apologetic, not realising it would print on the customer’s receipt'. The staff member was then placed on a three-month probation.
The customer has since been spoken with and will be returning for a meal at the pub.
While this incident has been a reminder for hospitality staff to be mindful of what’s typed in the internal system, it also serves as a reminder for us all to laugh about our mishaps–life’s too short to take everything too seriously!
As our dining experiences evolve unexpectedly, the importance of nurturing a respectful, diplomatic, and understanding environment within the hospitality industry has never been more prevalent. In an era where every receipt, every meal, and every experience can be shared instantly online, it pays to remember that while ‘the customer is always right’ might be an old and overused adage, it still holds its truth.
So, whether it's extra gravy or ice in your wine, the trending motto for the hospitality sector seems to be 'ask, and you shall receive... graciously and without judgement'. And remember, dear members, a little kindness and understanding can never hurt. Let's keep it all chill–just like that pinot grigio!
