I'm now on the Disability Pension after having worked 35 years with my birth disability. It's hard I agree but is manageable. I also suppose that I'm lucky in that I own my own home, but it requires a $lot of maintenance works. My stove/oven has not worked for many years now and it sits in my very old kitchen. I purchased a small Cuisinart bench steam oven, a Breville Air Fryer oven, bench Induction plates. They are small but very suitable and save a lot of money as well on energy. Less energy means less on my energy bill.
There are ways of saving money and eating well, but cheaply. Instead of buying cut up chicken & deskinned chicken in packets where the prices are about $5.99-$18.00 per kilo. Wait for the stores to have whole fresh chickens on sale for $3.50-$5.00 (the very highest price point at the moment). Then, buy a few whole chickens on the sale price and get them home, cut them up yourself and deskin as well. Place portions inside good quality freezer bags (Multix brand are the best... so only buy these). Also, always check Woolies deli counter as well to see if the drumsticks are on sale down to $3.00-$3.50 per kilo. Just because it's not mentioned in the catalogue does not mean it's not on sale. Many items go on sale, even $half price sale and are not mentioned in the weekly catalogues.
Always check the items in store to see if they are on sale anyway. Go to the aisle or even check the store website every Wednesday when their new week and sales always begins. Also, just because it's not mentioned on the website, check in-store anyway as their deli counter is never mentioned on the website.
My meals can cost about $1.00-$4.00 a meal at the very most. My coffee made from milk once a day, maybe an Ovaltine drink milk & water (Ovaltine purchased on sale). Maybe some fruit if I can afford that. So, a day for myself on average maybe works out $6.00 per day at most (365 days a year x $6.00 Per Day = $2,190.00). Then, add toiletries, laundry, hygiene products = approx. $2,500 per year. Then I also add my cats & strays that come in for the meals, plus Revolution Plus treatments, kitty litter. All purchased on sale.
You can eat cheaply. Get some of your fruit & veggies from the fruit markets and 'cook up.' I have just prepared 10 serves of Potato Bake at about $1.00 each. Purchased 5 kg of potatoes from fruit market $7.00, grated tasty cheese, dried parmesan cheese, some Aldi full cream. I also have prepared Salmon Patties as well. Woolies Pink Salmon tin and I still have half a bag of potatoes left.
When you cook carrots, cut up more and cook them and freeze ready for another meal. Cook more rice & pasta, again ready for another easy meal. Cook more spaghetti sauce. Always freeze in manageable portions and not in one whole bulk. You can always pull out more portions if needed.
