New Kmart measure sparks uproar among shoppers: ‘So annoying’

Shopping for a favourite piece of clothing at an affordable price can be one of life's simple pleasures, especially for the budget-conscious.

But as some Kmart customers are finding out, new store-wide security measures are turning this joyous pastime into a frustrating ordeal.

Over the past year, Kmart shoppers have seen an increasing number of clothing items with security tags, a widespread anti-theft mechanism employed by many retailers.

These devices are typically removed at the checkout by sales staff after payment has been confirmed.

However, Kmart's recent move has placed the onus on customers to remove these security tags themselves.

Disgruntled shoppers have voiced their frustration on social media, pointing out the inconvenience of missing or overlooking tags during the self-checkout process.

One customer lamented, 'I actually get really annoyed when this happens because we are forced to self-checkout, and sometimes they are hiding so well you don’t know they are on!'

‘My son has smashed them with a hammer after this happened to me, and I was super s***ty about having to drive 20 minutes back to the store! They came off.’

Another customer who had forgotten to remove a security tag cursed the inconvenience.

'That’s the problem when self-scanning because no one takes these off. I was in a hurry and bought Lego the other day and it still had the security tag on it! So annoying!'

‘This happened to me the other day. The person at the door who checks the bags on everyone’s exit actually has the remover thingy of these at the table with her,’ another added.

‘Obviously, it happens all the time. You shouldn’t need to go all the way to the store in this case!’

Further, Kmart's apparent stringent security measures at the exit gates have also annoyed customers.

One shopper complained, 'Still don’t understand security tags when it’s all self-serve and harassed at the door every time.'

In light of these shared frustrations, some Kmart customers have offered advice to other shoppers.

One offered a tip on how to spot security-tagged items at the self-checkout: 'Did you use self-checkout? If so, please notice that tagged items flash amber on screen and ask for approval.'

A shopper named @smalldumpycat online recounted her harrowing experience of discovering a security tag on her newly purchased pair of Kmart pants.

‘I didn’t steal them, we just went through self-serve, and I didn't realise it was there,’ she said.

She later realised the tag and been attached to the clothing label. This meant she could easily remove it herself and avoid having to return to Kmart.

‘You’re lucky it was placed there. In retail, we are supposed to put them halfway a seam to make it difficult to remove,’ one commented.

Kmart has yet to comment publicly about these grievances.
