Nat Barr awkwardly struggles during her Oscars red carpet coverage - “It’s the funniest thing on TV”

We’ve all had our fair share of cringe-fests when dealing with a new job, it’s simply a part of learning that we all have to accept. Fortunately for us, our awkward moments and growing pains aren’t broadcasted on TV internationally.

Channel 7 viewers couldn’t peel their eyes off Sunrise star Nat Barr’s Oscars red carpet coverage – but not in the way you’d expect.

The red carpet newbie looked visibly stressed as she braved the heavily anticipated event packed with A-list celebrities, she was caught waving a packet of Tim Tams around and anxiously playing with her hair as she desperately tried to grab the attention of the international icons strutting by.

Barr accepted her fate and instead tried to make light of the situation, a peek of what it’s really like behind the curtains of the film industry’s most glamorous nights.

While Barr did manage to score interviews with a couple of well-known celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Billie Eilish, she revealed that others ‘didn’t care’ and would walk straight past.

“One thing I’m learning as an Oscars red carpet first timer is that some people stop for you, some people really couldn’t care less, so I’m riding off the coat-tails of… shall we say two more experienced people,” she explained.

“We’ve got ET on one side and Access Hollywood on the other. These guys know what they’re doing… I’m basically just stealing all the people who stop for them. I just sort of butt-in. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails dismally.”

Her colleagues back in Australia didn’t provide her with much help either.

“Serena, Serena!” Barr was caught trying to call the attention of Venus Williams, mixing the tennis star up with her sister Serena Williams until The Morning Show’s Kylie Gillies pointed out back at the studio: “That’s Venus.” which left Larry Emdur to burst out into laughter beside Kylie.

“Would it be rude to put my microphone in?” Barr asked, looking agitated as the reporter next to her chatted with the tennis stars. In an attempt to keep the moment from getting even more awkward than it already is, she yelled “We love tennis!” as the tennis stars walked away.

But this wasn’t the only scene that made viewers wince from second-hand embarrassment. During another cross to the event, Barr was seen furrowing her eyebrows as she struggled to communicate with Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies.

“Sorry, I can barely hear you. It’s really, really loud here.” she said.

Users flocked to Twitter to share their comments on Barr’s predicament, with many thinking that she wasn’t the right person for the job.

“One needs to be loud and assert their presence more to get the actors’ attention.” one person argued.

“I like Nat, but she isn’t the right person for the red carpet job.” another chimed in.

But a third found her unpleasant attempts incredibly entertaining saying: “I was crying laughing at Nat trying to get interviews… best interviewer ever!!!”
