It is important to always check the senders email address. If the email address is not the same as one from a trusted source, and do not click on any links from any emails. Scammers will try to imitate legitimate email addresses. Look for any inconspicuous dots, hyphens, capital letters that can be used to separate an email address. Look for any other discrepancies that are different for a known and trusted source. You can always check if the email has come from a specific source by ringing them directly. They will be able to tell you if any emails have been sent to you. Treat all emails especially those with clickable links, treat these as scams until you can prove otherwise.
Stay safe, stay vigilant and never rush to answer an email.

Those fake “myGov” emails arrive in my inbox at least once every couple of days, sometimes more often. As a former executive manager in the federal public service, I can assure you that no government department will send out an email telling you to open a link to get a message. Never! These fake emails do not have your name and address with other details (such as Tax File Number or Centrelink number) to identify you as the recipient. They are bulk scam emails. Take pleasure in deleting them immediately. If a government department wants to contact you, they will send a letter in the post with your name, address and identifying details. You can then check on it with the department concerned.

I did get this one just after 1 July, so thought it was about a new pension payment. I didn’t click on the link, but went into my MyGov account online, only to find there was no message. It really looked like a genuine email from MyGov. Thank goodness I didn’t use their link.

Smart move, VM53. That’s what everyone should do. Check any incoming message through the official website. Remember: if it doesn’t have identifying information (name, address, TFN, etc) then it is a scam. If it is a text, delete it. If it is a generic email, delete it. In this case, paranoia pays!

Scam emails like that are so frustrating. A few months ago, I got one pretending to be from myGov too. Looked super legit, almost fooled me, but then I noticed the email address was off. I didn’t click anything and used https://bulkemailchecker.com/ to double-check it. Turns out it was totally a scam. Super easy to use, and it helped confirm my gut feeling. After that, I reported it and deleted the email right away. The scammers are getting sneakier, so definitely good to stay alert and avoid any links or attachments unless you're 100% sure it's legit.

You say "Also, report this email as a scam by following the screenshots below: ..."
The screenshots are great but, in the email on my desktop computer, I can't find anything that resembles them. I switched to New Outlook and still found nothing relevant.
Any advice on how to access the drop-down menu for handling spam would be much appreciated.
Screen shot This works for analog don't know about apple

The best thing to remember is that the MyGov is the federal government and as we all know they ain't going to give us any money that they can get out of give us.
Anyway that is the way I look at it, I get all these emails stating that I am going to get a refund or some other way of getting money from MyGov I just delete them they are all scams trust me the federal government isn't that generous.

Please don't click on any of them they are scams and a scammer only needs access to your hard drive for a few seconds and then they can duplicate your hard drive drive empty your bank account etc.

ALSO never download a program called ANY DESK If you receive a email or phone call say that you have a problem with your computer and they will fix it remotely Any Desk gives them total control over your computer they can see everything on your device and can copy it in seconds.

If you get a phone call like this hang up immediately if the same number calls you again don't answer the phone. If you have any concerns about the issue call your bank most have a 24 hour contact number.
Please be extremely careful with anything sent to you via email that you don't know the sender, Google it if it's a

Be extremely careful these scammers are professional at what they do do not hesitate in going or calling your bank if your unsure about a transaction or email they are only to happy to give you any assistance you require, I personally have my bank account set up so that when I need to pay a account I take it into the branch they transfer the funds accross for me in the branch.
The reason for this I have had several unsuccessful attempts to hack my account for a petulance scammer who is not happy with me because of this nobody can access my account unless I in the branch with them to transfer money from my account to their account it's stopped all scams immediately and permanently.
It's very drastic action but I have taken it to protect my financial situation and it works very well for me.

I highly recommend this action if you are having major problems with scammers ets. Remember these scammers are the scum of the earth and will say and do anything to get access to your financial situation.

Please think about this..

One more thing thing I have all my usual accounts ie powers water etc all set up for direct debit it's a fantastic idea.
I hope this information will be of some assistance to whom ever require it, I am happy to answer any questions you may have but please not I have to go for a appointment I probably would not be back home until later today.

I never click on links and that includes emails from friends. MyGov has an app so I go to the all. Telstra, banks, Amazon all have apps so I check the apps. No legit email should ask you to click on a link. Even my Doctors surgery who use HotDoc advise to check the app for a message! 🤞🤞been lucky so far! 😊

If I get a message or e-mail from what looks like MyGov, Bank, McAfee or whatever, firstly I look at the e-mail address of the sender. Usually it's a personal address. Then I block it, if possible and delete it or move it to SPAM, as appropriate.

If I think it could be legitimate, I certainly NEVER press on any link in the message. I go to my MyGov account, Bank account etc. and see if there is a genuine message for me.

There never is with Scam messages of course.

I've had dozens of these emails supposedly from Telstra. I have also had scam emails stating that my security on my emails has run out and requesting that I pay for the renewal. To me these are obviously scams but to some people they might be fooled. Telstra does not send emails for renewal of a part of their emails like security as it is automatically included.
I changed carriers I dumped Telstra and went to Aussie Broadband for internet & Southern Phones for my mobile phone, my scam emails were cut back very severely providing that the telco's are able to stop most of the scam emails getting to our inbox. Yes I do receive spam emails but they have dropped by about 80%.

I was having major issues with Telstra for several months so I changed carriers I have not had a problem since, what was happening I set up direct debit to make it easier for me (or so I thought) on several occasions the payment didn't go, now I have no idea this happened until I am informed, so Telstra would cut my internet off in the middle of the night, I called the Telstra shop no one answers the phone, So I have to drive to the local Telstra shop when I get there I am asked if I have a appointment I said no, WhenI am asked why I am great pleasure in saying that you don't answer your phone.

Something else that really annoyed me with Telstra was the fact that you had to make a appointment to see them in store this is crap. Going back a few years ago I took a friend to the local Telstra shop there was a lady in the shop who travelled over 75km and they refused to speak to her now that person needs to be sacked on the spot.
I for one will never deal in Telstra again.

The telco's have the ability to stop most of these emails from scammers getting through but they are not interested in doing it. My bet is the bigger the telco the more spam etc you receive. But as I said earlier if you could any doubts you can contact PayPal if you're using them they are awesome they are very user friendly I paid for everything I can with PayPal, for anyone who is unfamiliar with PayPal what happens is when I make a purchase online ie eBay,
I would recommend if you are having issues with your money with online shopping open a PayPal account that way the only person who has access to your finance is PayPal they send the money then PayPal takes it from your account.

I hope this information is helpful

I have received both those scam letters plus another received today supposedly from My Gov but when you hit the MyGov sign at the top of the letter it reveals the sender as [email protected], whoever that is:

You have two important notifications:

  1. Centrelink – working Stream Update Required
  2. Australian Taxation Office – Review Your Updated Tax Assessment

Since I haven't worked for the last 22 years it was obviously a scam.

I have never opened an email from MyGov. I go straight to my MyGov account first to see if there is a message on there from them, if not I then delete the message as it is so obviously a scam.

Having to make an appointment to deal with Telstra is a sign for customers to move on! My friend needed a new phone and went to Telstra to make the purchase. He was told they could not help him without an appointment. To buy a phone!?? Are they kidding? It sounds like they are trying to put themselves out of business.

What you have to realise these shops are not owned by Telstra, they are merely licensed to do certain things in Telstra's name. Would you rather wait in a queue or know your time won't be wasted at the Telstra shop?
