Sharing on a popular Facebook group for Bunnings shoppers, one mum has shocked hundreds of fellow members after revealing how she transformed her entire home’s exterior into a modern showpiece using nothing more than a $10 buy from Bunnings!
Jodie Hogan, a mum-of-three living in Melbourne, had always despised her house’s orange-bricked walls. So in her attempt to “give it a new life”, she looked into various ways to change its colour.
That was when she encountered a home design trend that has only recently become insanely popular.
Introducing the limewash look.

So she quickly headed to her local Bunnings store to purchase a bag of Builders Hydrated Lime, which cost her around $10.50.
Once she got home, the 49-year-old mum went to work on the house renovation right away.
Using a fork, she mixed one litre of water and three cups of Australian Builders Hydrated Lime into a small container. With a brush, she applied the mixed solution onto her walls.
However, she noticed that it was “too clear” so she kept on adding more layers of paint. Turns out, the lime solution thickens when it dries, so she wiped some off with a sponge as she went on.
Jodie continued to experiment on her lime mixture ratio to achieve the consistency that she wanted. When she added more water to the mixture, it turned out to be the exact “washed” look she was after.
So she continued painting the rest of her walls, starting at the back of the house until the sides and the whole front facade was well and covered.
In total, she spent about 20 hours over 10 days to complete her budget makeover project. Jodie said that she never expected that the result could look as good as it did.
“So much better than the orange 1970s bricks!”

Limewash is a paint finish made from crushed limestone mixed with various natural pigments. It is often combined with water to lighten up stone and timber, giving it a romantic and storied texture that is chalk-like when touched.
And since the alkaline pH of limestone makes it extra mould and bacteria-resistant, it can also be a great paint alternative for anyone in need of a more hypoallergenic environment.
