Mosquito invasion causes major safety concern in one state

Bustling cities are often abuzz with people going about their day.

However, citizens in a city's southwest area have been hearing an unwelcome whirring from a disease-carrying insect, keeping them on the edge.

A mosquito invasion has swept through Sydney, which immediately prompted public health concerns and a response from local authorities.

Locals have been staying indoors since the swarming, as stepping outside could be a gamble with health.

'We're inundated. It's like a plague,' Chipping Norton resident Elizabeth Clonaris lamented.

'We can't step outside of our front doors and can't hang clothes outside.'

'It's not just Chipping Norton that's affected. It's Wattle Grove, it's Hammondville, it's Moorebank,' Ms Clonaris added.

NSW Health Pathology Scientist Cameron Webb warned about mosquito-borne diseases.

'They can spread pathogens that can make you sick, like the Ross River virus,' Webb stated.

In the face of this buzzing menace, residents have adopted unconventional tactics to fight off the swarming.

'We make sure we use a blower to go outside to get rid of the mozzies,' resident Brian Milankovic shared.

Southwest local Therese Stewart has since started buying citronella by the litre and uses an average of two bottles of insect spray daily.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Liverpool City Council immediately whipped out an outbreak response plan.

'Wherever this problem lies, we will identify what the root cause is, and we will work together to ensure the residents are looked after,' the council's Acting CEO, Jason Breton, assured community members.

The council's multi-pronged strategy included:
  • Trapping mosquitoes in hot spots
  • Identifying species and management options
  • Spraying larvicide in public areas and the insect's natural habitats
The council has collaborated with Sydney Water to inspect and manage the Liverpool Water Recycling Plant, which could be a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes.

NSW Health has been assigned to monitor possible mosquito hotspots in the Chipping Norton area.

The council has also reached out to homeowners who have neglected swimming pools.

They urged them to clean or drain pools, as they could become mosquito breeding sites.

They also highlighted the importance of eliminating stagnant water in homes, often seen in pot plant saucers, bird baths, roof gutters, and rainwater tanks.

The council compiled a comprehensive list of advice and recommended products on its Community Response page—which could protect anyone from the current infestation and reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
Key Takeaways

  • Southwest Sydney has been experiencing a significant mosquito infestation.
  • Citizens raised concerns about the potential health impacts of the increasing mosquito population.
  • The Liverpool City Council has already released an outbreak response plan and has collaborated with several offices to inspect possible mosquito breeding spots.
  • The council also advised residents to eliminate any mosquito breeding sites on their property, such as pools, bird baths and rainwater tanks, among others.

I first had Ross River when about 14/15 with weekends up the river skiing. It flares up periodically, however for 30 years now I see a naturopath and she checks for it and its treated homoeopathically. Like with some other viruses, even like Epstein Barr, they don leave and will flare. I've had chronic fatigue the bulk of my like with these 2 viruses alone. One doesn't sleep with this kind of fatigue. I am careful with weather/humidity , water areas pooling anywhere. I have several pools around me on the block where I have my house and some aware and keep inside during these conditions. It can be a pain in the butt. But mozzies are like flies too. We have them here in OZ and one does their best to avoid them when possible.
I've never experienced swarms like is reported here though, not sure how I would go. The RRvirus I can tell generally as the area becomes raised and breaks into a pussy mess.
I'm so sorry you have gone through this. 😔

More click bait, scaremongering Headlines!
Heavens sake, it’s mosquitoes.
Lock yourselves indoors people the mosquitoes are out to get you!
You are always using the word scaremongering !!! I just found out my Godmother who is 84 is in hospital. She caught covid from her daughter . She was taken to hospital via ambulance a few days ago. She now has pneumonia because of covid. She isn't vaccinated. She is now fighting for her life.

Her daughters whole family had covid 3 weeks ago and she said it was worst far worst than the previous two times she had it and worst than other Flu's.

I suppose you will now say this is scaremongering!!!

But will the ants get on with the cockroaches???
They certainly will. i.e. a never ending supply of "YUMMY, YUMMY,YUMMY, breakfast, lunch & dinner.

By the way "Veggie",I want to reply to the previous "?" where I asked where you lived in your youthfull days.
Being in Riverwood would well have been very post "Herne Bay" days. I remember when the name change took place & the reason why.

Correct me if I'm wrong, the main drag off Canterbury rd., to go into "Rivo", if my memory is right, is Belmore rd. If so, can you recall a butcher shop on the left hand side before reaching the railway station in the shopping strip. I can't remember its name, but I knew the guy who owned it, Jim. Anyway, he was always on the phone to me to work for him on my days off out from my own job. So, therefore I worked many, many a day at keeping my hand in at butchering. Maybe your mum could well have been a customer there?

You did mention Narwee Boys High school going back a month or 2 now. Well, I have been guilty of having quite a number of cooling ales at the Narwee pub with an old fishing mate of mine, who unfortunately passed away about 4-5 years ago, who lived in Beverly Hills off Broadarrow road.

I remember that butcher shop. There was always saw dust on the floor. The butcher was really nice ,I remember he always gave us free frankfurts. Outside the shop was a drinking bath for dogs. It was near the dry cleaners Shortys which is probably the only old shop still there

It was Herne Bay during World War II when the US army huts were there where the M5 Motorway is now. They were still there when I moved to Riverwood in 1965.

One of my mates had a butcher shop on Belmore Road near Josephine Street. His name was Mick but everyone affectionately knew him as "Choco" due to his Syrian heritage. It was a one man show. I'm not sure which butcher Mum went to though.

The pub, the Domino, was a couple of hundred metres down Josephine Street - my watering hole. I did go to Narwee pub on the corner of Broadarrow Road and Penshurst Street, quite a few times, a two storey joint.

Good memories buddy! We may have crossed paths years ago!

Its funny at times in conversation, how varying things & situations can become a "Small World". I was part timing in the butcher shop during the '70's into the '80's.

You just never know if our paths crossed. Good on you, champ.

Hi Suzanne rose,

It would have been interesting if the shop was owned by the "Jim", at the time, when you shopped there.
You never know, I may have seen you there.

Hi again "SR",

I didn't know any of the other shop owners etc. You certainly have a good memory to be able to rattle the names off.
Yes, I have to agree with you how you can recall a lot f the shop owners of where you grow up. Even my older grey matter can still recall, not all, but a real good number of where I grew up. Q

Can I ask how old you are. And did you grow up in Riverwood? Veggiepatch and I grew up there the same time and knew many of the same people

Hi again, 'SR",

I'm 80, staring down 81 in the not to distant future, just around the corner, & going great guns.

No, I didn't live in the "Riverwood" district. I was born at Homebush, & lived in Lidcombe until 1st marriage in '68. Then Hurstville Grove, Kirrawee, divorced in '85, then Harris Park to end of '92 when I remarried, then at Quakers Hill to end of '97, retired beginning Jan '98. Actually move to North Haven end of '97 for 16 & a bit years, now in the middle of Laurieton, for now 11 1/2 years. "Luv'n" every minute of it.

I actually caught up with Jim the butcher when he was advertising for butchers in 1970, when I was on Annual Leave. He was working for Tancred Brothers Meats in an outlet at the Sydney fish markets.

My wife was working while I was on leave, saw his add & thought I'd give it a shot. They cut big orders for the drive in theatres, hospitals & restaurants. Only opened for the public on Fridays & Saturdays.

Jim left there a bit after about mid '70 & bought the shop at Riverwood. Then he pestered me for yonks to come & work as he was, again involved with hospital orders & the such, with heaps of work.

And, my dear, that's how I got to know Riverwood as I did. You, now, as everyone else does, of my bit of history, Hope you enjoyed as I have to let you know.

I'm off to go down to check out a couple of beaches very shortly in the hope to go chasing the "Silver Ghost of the Sea", namely a jewfish/ mulloway tonight. My 1st flurry for the "New Season".

"Littleboy8" mentioned a while back that he'd 'Luv' to join me. How about you, Veggie, Ebby, DHLM, Magpie1 &, no doubt, a few others, joining me in the "Hunt".

"Novezar".

My son lives in Wattle Grove, my daughter in Casula and my other daughter Panania, and the problem is very severe .

There is a lot of bush and waterways around there.

My kids have now purchased mozzie zappers
I lived Darwin as a child back in the 70's and the council used to have 'Fogger' machines cruising around every night fogging the whole area with pesticide of some description, worked an absolute treat, no skeeties back then, we used run through the fog ..lol. To many princess's around now days hence you can't do stuff like that and eliminate the mossies anymore so put up with it and suffer all you do gooders that stop effective methods and ruin it for everyone.
