In a bold move that harks back to a bygone era, one of Australia's Big Four banks is considering a change that could significantly benefit millions of Australians.

This bank is contemplating a return to Sunday branch openings, a practice that has been dormant for many years, leaving the final day of the week bank-branch-free for most Aussies.


This potential shift in operations comes as the National Australian Bank (NAB) announced the expansion of its Saturday trading hours, adding more than a dozen branches to the existing roster.

Ana Marinkovic, NAB's personal banking chief, spoke to the Australian Financial Review, indicating that the bank is open to exploring various innovative ideas.

'Everything is on the table. I am considering it, absolutely,' she stated.

While Commonwealth Bank and ANZ have previously dabbled with the idea of conducting trial runs, their efforts did not result in permanent changes.

Should NAB proceed with Sunday openings, it would set a precedent among the major banks and could pave the way for others to follow suit.


The initiative aims to accommodate the banking needs of customers who struggle to visit branches during the typical workweek.

Recognising the challenge, NAB is already making strides by extending Saturday operations to 29 branches nationwide.

This weekend marks the inclusion of 17 new branches to the Saturday schedule, following positive community feedback from the initial 12 that began opening on Saturdays in November of the previous year.

Paul Carter, Executive for Personal Bank at NAB, acknowledged that while digital banking has revolutionised the industry and lessened the reliance on physical branches, the value of in-person services remains undiminished.

'We’re taking a fresh look at how we serve our customers, and Saturday trading is the perfect complement to the $41 million we’ve invested in renovating our branches over the last year,' he explained.


Catering to customers' busy lives, NAB is committed to providing more accessible banking options.

'Between work, picking up kids, and personal appointments, trying to get additional errands done during the week is tricky at best,' Carter added.

'That’s why we’re designing NAB around what suits our customers and providing more access for those who rely on face-to-face service.'

Customers like Cameron and Brooke, securing a home loan, have welcomed the move.

'Organising all of our loan documents remotely due to work has been challenging; it’s much more reassuring being able to talk to someone face-to-face,' Cameron shared.

'And knowing we can now come in on a Saturday instead of having to leave work early or visit the branch during a lunch break when working from home is great.'


In addition to the extended branch hours, NAB is responding to increased demand for cash services by installing 39 new ATMs across various states and territories.

This expansion counters the trend towards a cashless society, which has significantly reduced bank branches and ATMs in recent years.

Canstar reported that 230 bank branches closed permanently during the 2023-24 financial year, with over 6,000 ATMs disappearing in the last five years.

The move by NAB is a refreshing change in an industry that has been contracting its physical presence.

It's a reminder that despite the convenience of digital banking, there is still a strong demand for the personal touch that only face-to-face interaction can provide.

A great number of seniors would be trilled to hear of more services such as the ones considered by the NAB bank. While most of the other banks are keeping their clients at a distance this is a welcomed improvement. Providing extra services on a Sunday and having welcoming branches would be expensive. However, the number of clients attracted by this Bank's understanding attitude toward its clients would largely increase/attract a number of new clients

its a bit late we have all been educated to not dirty up their precious branch and so we stay away from dirtying up the carpets and dont annoy the staff by expecting service ....its too late for me I wont deal with a bank other than on line now and I hate it....banks are so annoying and phone "customer phrases" so phoney that they are annoying ...its better they say nothing than a phoney ."have a nice day".......I must say I do enjoy my relationship with my building society for now but I fear they are just waiting to become a bank and so it goes on ......

For a second I thought that they might go back and open more branches around the Country and gave more people the opportunity to talk face to face with someone regarding their banking needs.....but NO.....that would mean giving their customers a thing called SERVICE......and we all know that getting that from our banking institutions is as long dead as the DINOSAURS.
I was talking to the teller in our bank last week about bank closures , BOQ closing 16 branches ,so called bank of the people,plus one now charging for bank withdrawals,and she our bank has gone in with Elders to help people with banking, in country areas. Which bank (AUSWIDE).

Was a building building society, years ago.
 
And posties used to blow their whistles on their twice-daily deliveries ...
i didnt know thet delvered twice a day lucky if you get one a day plus they dont work saturdays what a sad service aussie post is and with all the increases in charge why is it they always copy GB post and that is purly private now and the profit it makes here with all them junk stamps they print cheap looking to say the least

We had great service years ago, now they toss parcels around and damage, items , the ones higher up are overpaid ,and service has gone to the dogs.

To me, as a retired elderly ex-banker, this is quite amusing. Back in the early '60s, when I worked for a Scottish bank, and we opened on Saturday mornings, a survey was conducted of customers' needs for bank services on that day. The overwhelming result was that those who banked on Saturdays could do so between Monday and Friday. Consequently Saturday morning opening was abolished and replaced by Thursdays between 5 and 7pm in addition to 10am to 3pm which were the usual opening hours in those pre-electronic days. When I investigated joining an Australian bank, I found to my delight that they already didn't open on Saturdays. I don't remember any banks ever opening on Sundays. Incidentally, Scottish banks also closed for lunch between 12.30 and 1.30pm and enjoyed a monthly Wednesday shopkeepers' half-day holiday. Those were the days!
 
NAB should focus on real support for people. Recently scammed. Very obvious to the bank as the mule/scammers account. Was new, went up suddenly, shifted large funds very quickly etc. So obvious but they did nothing and did not want to help us. Basically just encouraged the scammer. Poor show. This bank is all show and no action.
 
Won't affect us because our only banks branch closed over 20 years ago. We now have to rely on our local post office or drive 200kms to the nearest branch
 
I have never known a bank to be open on a Sunday. However, I think a full work day on a Saturday would be great. I also think the acknowledgement that people still want to use cash, do not want to rely on on-line services and the marked preference to speak with a human is a great step forward. Hanging on a phone for an hour, spending another frustrating amount of time pushing buttons and getting nowhere, typing enquiries to a robotic chat line (which is unhelpful) to have a simple mater attended to is excruciatingly frustrating. Yes, banks always want to hit you with a fee but I still think a return to some semblance of sanity regarding human to human interaction is a great step forward. Be THANKFUL to this Bank which has at least taken a first step towards that. My final take: Extend a full day of banking on a Saturday -do a half day Sunday if they wish but a full day Saturday would best and glad that some ATMs are being reinstated. This is all a positive move not seen in a very long time so well done NAB.
 
No, we don't need banks on Sunday, though Saturday would be useful for working people. What we do need more than this, is for branch closures to cease & those recent closures to be reversed. My local branch of NAB sits idle & unoccupied more than 18mths after closing - forcing customers to travel 30mins by car to the nearest branch. I know that customers in country & regional centres have to travel far greater distances for face-to-face service. It is completely unacceptable to withdraw essential services such as this. NAB even failed to leave an ATM.
