Meghan Markle’s Netflix series gets cancelled mid-production — here’s why

It's a sad day for Netflix subscribers who were looking forward to the Duchess of Sussex's upcoming show, Pearl. The streaming giant has confirmed that the show has been cancelled, believed to be at least partly due to recent cutbacks.

The series, which was being created by Archewell Productions, the production company founded by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, was still in development when it was officially cancelled. It's believed that the decision was made as part of wider cutbacks at Netflix after the company missed its subscriber target by 200,000 people.

The show was set to be executive produced by Elton John's husband David Furnish and was described as a family series that "centres on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who finds inspiration from several influential women throughout history".

Last year, the Duchess of Sussex spoke about the series, saying: "Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges."

"I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history. David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today."

The cancellation of Pearl does not mean that we will not be seeing any content from the Sussexes, however, as the estranged royal couple still has a number of projects in the works, including a documentary series called Heart of Invictus.

The series is said to be focused on the work of the Invictus Games Foundation, which was founded by Prince Harry. It's not clear when the series will be released, but it's likely that we'll see it sometime this year.

It should be noted that the streaming giant made a $100 million deal with Harry and Meghan in September 2020.

However, the couple has yet to release any content for the streaming site.

Netflix has notably cut two other children's shows from their lineup and fired a number of staff, with insiders saying that the company notified producers to take projects still in development elsewhere.

It's unclear if Archewell Productions was given similar advice.

Does anybody really care what she is doing.

Best thing that could happen the press has to stop giving these two any publicity ... they are both a disgrace
