Man's daredevil stunt causes commotion and 'terror' among airline passengers

Safety is paramount when it comes to travelling—especially on air.

Passengers are often reminded of the rituals of flight—buckling seat belts and safety cards and waiting for the captain's instructions to disembark.

However, a recent incident on a Jetstar flight left passengers in a state of shock and disbelief.

Jetstar flight JQ507 from Sydney to Melbourne went through a smooth journey and landed at the Tullamarine Airport.

That was until a man immediately opened the emergency door and went up to one of the aeroplane's wings.

Passenger Audrey Varghese recounted the experience as she witnessed it first-hand.

According to Varghese's account, a man exhibiting 'really antisocial' behaviour stood up while the aeroplane was still moving.

The man's disregard for the rules and the crew's stunned reaction were a prelude to the chaos.

As the aeroplane stopped, he made his way to the emergency exit, pushing fellow passengers with a startling sense of urgency.

With a forceful shove, he opened the aeroplane's emergency door, and the man stepped out onto an aircraft wing.

'It was hectic. Everyone was screaming. It was just pure terror,' Varghese stated.

'People were so terrified of what could have gone wrong.'

The video footage captured the man standing on the wing.

In a final act of recklessness, he leapt from the wing to the ground below, where airport staff intervened.

The Australian Federal Police swiftly arrested the man, citing 'alleged aggressive behaviour and breaching aircraft safety protocols'.

Charges should follow as the severity of the offence was undeniable.

The aftermath of the incident was a mixture of relief and frustration for the remaining passengers.

While they disembarked safely, their journey was far from over.

Passengers faced a 45-minute delay in retrieving their luggage as the emergency slide obstructed the cargo door.

Despite the disruption, Jetstar was praised for handling luggage and managing the situation.

The Jetstar aeroplane involved in the incident is temporarily out of service for repairs and is due for an emergency door replacement.

  • Australian Federal Police arrested the man and could face potential charges. WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE "COULD" FACE CHARGES? ISN'T IT A FEDERAL OFFENCE? HE " SHOULD BE IN GAOL ' NOW, AND FOR A LONG TIME. HE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGE AND NEVER TO BE ABLE TO FLY AGAIN.

Airlines will need to make the emergency doors absolutely lockable. This is crazy & dangerous behaviour. Imagine if he’d done it in mid flight!
When the cabin is pressurised the doors cannot be opened as they are automatically locked so no way can they be opened in mid-flight. Once the plane has touchdown (although still moving) the doors are automatically unlocked for emergency exit if needed.

You can't lock the door because it would not be an emergency door then.

In September 1981, I flew from Sydney to Denpensar sitting adjacent the door when a child about five years of age started swinging on the exit door handle. Straight on with the seatbelt in case the door flew open at 29000 feet. I asked a flight attendant what could happen if the door opened. She replied that the door could not be unlocked as it is remotely locked by flight cabin staff with a fail safe mechanism. What a relief!

The poor devil was probably scared stiff for some reason we can't understand. He created an emergency ; had it been a serious emergency the bloke would have been called a hero for acting to pre-empt a worse disaster. Was he a former firie and suffering from PTSD? I know one firie who woke up 13 times in one night because in his sleep he could smell that his house was on fire and when checking the living room he could see the living room burning, although it wasn't. Or maybe the bloke suffered someone dropping a bomb on his house/family/ friends, which seems all too common these days, particularly in the Middle East.

My father also suffered from PTSD ( called battle fatigue back in those days, and called cowardice in 1914-18).

Flog not lest thou gets flogged.
