We stumbled upon this wonderful photo from Melbourne back in 1965.

It's a snapshot of the bustling lunchtime rush in the city, complete with three coffee shop signs in the background. It's pretty clear that Australia has always had a love affair with coffee, right?

We'd love to hear about your lunchtime habits and haunts. Did you enjoy grabbing a bite with coworkers or taking a moment to relax with a solo meal?

I worked in the kitchen of the Wyndham W.A meatworks in 1973. Lunch was Fillet Minion and other meals. The Yugoslavs who worked with the hides came in and demanded "steak" we told them that Fillet Minion was steak but they started to yell "steak"and grumble at staff, there was some stewing steak so we threw it on the hotplate and served them. When we called out "5 stewing steak meals " the rest of the dining hall erupted in laughter.

I hope it was all worth the fuss for them :ROFLMAO:

Not quite what you asked...Landed in Melbourne 14 April 1965, the Wednesday before the Easter long weekend. Left the ship at 8am, our belongings still on board, to have a look at the city we had chosen to live in for the next 2years. The whole city was fast asleep, included the so called busy lunch time, windy, cold, a bit of rain ... By 3pm we were on the train to Sydney. Never ever regretted that decision...ok we were coming all the way from Paris (yes the one with the Eiffel tower :) ). We arrived in Sydney by a cool stunning sunny morning, the harbour shimmering, yes the Australia we imagined... (my husband had made an 8mm movie of our whole trip and as a sound track for that short encounter with Melbourne he chose Mozart "little night music" ;-)

How lovely, @Michelle Sc --- down to the day and the time! What was your first impression of Melbourne and Australia based on what you saw when you landed?
