Long-due overhaul: This airport will face major renovations after 30 years

Travellers and jetsetters spend a chunk of their holidays in airports.

A comfortable airport is vital to enjoying a getaway, may it be a local destination or an international one.

One of Australia's gateways is on the cusp of transformation after decades of serving travellers.

Brisbane Airport will face its most significant overhaul in nearly three decades.

Starting next month, the airport's international terminal will go through major renovations.

The renovations are expected to be finished by 2027 and should be done in incremental steps to minimise disruption to passengers and airport staff.

The airport's new design will include elevated passport check-ins and security to level four.

This will also improve passengers' pre-flight experience.

Brisbane Airport's Chief Executive, Gert-Jan de Graaff, highlighted the importance of this redesign.

'It allows people to check in and drop their bags at the same level as where they go through security and the passport control, which is obviously intuitively a much better experience,' de Graaff stated.

Along with the renovation, the airport will add new high-tech scanners.

This will allow passengers to keep electronic items like laptops snug as they pass through security.

This is a game-changer for travellers who fumble with their electronics at a checkpoint, further smoothening the travel process.

Self-service kiosks will also be introduced for convenience.

These kiosks should reduce queueing times, giving travellers more control over their check-in process.

While self-service kiosks will be present, agent-led check-ins will still be available in the new airport.

Duty-free stores will also be renovated and double in size.

A variety of new food, beverage, and retail outlets will be added—perfect for travellers looking for last-minute gifts or a delicious meal before flights.

The departure lounge should also undergo a stylish makeover while still giving a nod to the airport's history.

The rocks used in the original terminal will be repurposed as the lounge's benchtops and furniture.

These renovations could pave the way for future terminal expansions and the possibility of extra flights in Brisbane.

'We would love to have a direct flight established between Brisbane and India into Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and Thailand,' De Graaff stated.

Brisbane Airport's grand makeover could open up a world of new travel opportunities for Australians and international visitors.

Ever tried negotiating Melbourne Airport? International and Domestic Terminals are all mixed in together! The signage is atrocious with directions to various terminals being ambiguous. Directional signs aren't on the terminal building at all! An arrow says go this way but you end up at a dead end. Look back and you passed it several hundred metres ago. Follow the arrows again and the terminal you want can't be seen. Ask a security goose where Terminal X is and he doesn't know. On the overhead screen, your flight leaves in 35 minutes. But you can't get there! I finally found the terminal after walking about 5 kilometres with 8 minutes before takeoff! That was April this year.

The last time I was at Brisbane Airport was in July 2015 but only at the Domestic Terminal. Found my way around it without problem thankfully!

And Perth Airport is receiving a $5 Billion upgrade, opening by 2031, which combines both Domestic and International, plus there will be a second new parallel runway opening in 2027. Perth is regarded as the Western International Gateway to Australia.

The Brisbane Airport was built based on many lies and mistruths. The community was told that ALL aircraft would arrive and depart over Moreton Bay. News paper article, full page, stated that 80% of daytime departures would be over Moreton Bay and 95% at night. Never happened in 35+ years. The curfew was removed as aircraft would not be needing to over fly residential areas. Total Lies. Down wind takeoff speed has been halved by CASA. Air Services Australia has been asleep at the helm for decades. Thousands of Brisbane residents suffer disturbed sleep nightly across over 100 suburbs.

Question? How do all the complainers about airports [ that in most cases have been there a long time before building creep closer and closer to the airport fence] travel? If they are going to Bali or Singapore etc etc do they go by car, train, bike? They are all too happy to park their bottoms on an aircraft seat and head away in holidays,

For a start, lower the price of buying food and drink at the airport....everything is so over-priced.
It's daylight robbery.
It may be that the high rents that business owners are charged force them to add to their prices.
