So, if you're looking to score incredible deals like this supermum, remember that timing is key. Don't be afraid to ask store employees or cashiers about the best time for markdowns in your store.

With a little bit of knowledge and a keen eye for deals, you, too, can become a savvy shopper and save big on your grocery bill.

Have you ever wondered why supermarkets sometimes offer incredible discounts on items nearing their best-before date? Well, a spokesperson for Coles gave some insight into this practice, stating that it's done to reduce wastage and provide value for money to shoppers.

The spokesperson explained that when a product is nearing its best-before date, instead of being wasted, the store marks it down so that customers can enjoy it for a lower price.

It's a win-win situation — customers get to save money while the store reduces its waste.

However, as mentioned earlier, it's important to note that markdowns don't have a set time across all stores. Many factors come into play, such as stock on hand, delivery schedules, and team member rostering, which can impact when and why a store decides to offer discounts.

Key Takeaways

  • A thrifty mum of four scored an incredible deal by taking advantage of her local store's markdowns on products nearing their best-before date.
  • By timing her shopping trips to coincide with markdowns, she was able to fill her freezer with over $200 worth of meat for just $12.14.
  • A spokesperson for Coles explained that the practice of marking down near-expiry items is done to reduce food wastage and provide value for money to shoppers and that the timing of markdowns varies depending on factors such as stock levels and delivery schedules.

It's not just one lucky mum who cracked the code of grocery shopping savings — many shoppers have shared their incredible experiences of scoring big discounts at their local stores!

Another savvy shopper revealed that she saved a whopping $200 on her grocery bill by shopping at a particular time. She shared that when she visited her local Coles store at 8 pm, she couldn't believe her eyes — almost everything was marked down to just 10 cents!

Talk about an unbelievable deal! She managed to fill her cart, paying only $3.60 for her entire haul. Now that's what we call smart shopping!

But she's not the only one who struck gold. Another Coles customer shared her amazing score of $215 worth of food items for just $10! How did she do it? By also shopping at 8 pm and taking advantage of the many discounted items available.

However, another shopper from Queensland was able to snag a massive haul of discounted meat for just $37 by visiting her local Coles in the late afternoon, around 3 pm.

And if you're looking for the best day to do your grocery shopping at Coles, many shoppers have suggested that Wednesday is the way to go. Apparently, the shelves get fully stocked the night before, so you're less likely to miss out on any specials.

unfortunately, up here in cairns [far north Queensland] we wont get much discounts as the shelf are empty
and I mean lots of them due to transport problems they say [roads are not closed so why]
my best time for discounted meats at woollies in Redlynch is afternoon school time so if I can I go there just before the after school rush and get maybe 10-20% discounts
big city bigger discount I guess

If one buys discounted meats nearing its use by date and you freeze it straight away does it last as long as if it is fresher when frozen? If this is the case then it should be ok to buy it, chicken as well.
You might get lucky. I've bought chicken a couple of times close to the expiry date and it was rank, even my cat wouldn't eat it.

Not in any coles I've ever seen.Usually only a meagre 5 or 10% off.

I reckon the butcher is slipping her a bit of sausage on the side !
I agree. I bet they have a family member working there and they have it at the back. They let them know that they are at the store and then the family-staff member comes out and put's the trays down so they are picked up quickly by their family member. I amazed that Woolworth's & Coles never investigate all of this.

Yes, saw this FB post and thought 'something Fishy' about all of this, including other posts about these 'we never get to see' ... Coles & Woollies markdowns.

My guesses are, that their children/grandchildren work there and have placed items at the back. They get marked down and then marked down yet again. All the time, sitting at the back of the store just waiting for the family member to arrive.

Why is it that many never see them 'ever.' I have seen posts were the meat is very questionable but a lot of these meats look fresh. Just do a big cook that night especially with the chicken and freeze in portions. Even cook meat in sauces, on stove top and bench oven. Several meals cooked all in one night and freeze in portions. Even cook the hamburger patties and sausages and then freeze them.

I've picked up cooking 'bulk' too, it's also handy, especially when you're too busy or tired doing something else. Just put in a bit of work to do the initial cooking and you get to just heat-reheat for the next couple of days!

A common trick is for a customer to pickup the discounted item, carry it around in your trolley until 5 minutes before closing and ask for a further discount ..... If I was the butcher, I'd say if you dont like the current price put it back on the shelf! Better to toss it than give it away at a 99% discount.

Years ago our local Woolworth would bring out their fruit and vegetables that they wanted to get rid of early in the morning at a very good discounted price. I shopped every Thursday and there was always this lady there waiting for all the food to come out and then pounce on it, she would take as much as she could get her hands on not leaving any for anyone else, to me it was sheer greed after about 6 weeks they stopped doing it and I would see her asking if the fruit and veggies were coming out and they would say that there was none

Sorry I can't help think that they don't have friends or relatives working there . I have only ever seen markdown packs by best a couple of dollars and that's for packets that have original price of $20 or more.

Why wouldn't the staff purchase these items ?
