Live out your Muriel's Wedding dreams – this Redfern property is now on the market!

We Aussies love a good cult classic film, and one of the most popular ones out there is Muriel's Wedding!

The story centres on Muriel, a shy and misunderstood young woman who spends her time listening to ABBA music and is forever daydreaming of a lavish wedding that will whisk her away from the hopeless coastal village of Porpoise Spit.

One lucky buyer now has the chance to turn this Redfern terrace into their very own version of the iconic movie set.

This three-bedroom property, located at 18 Turner Street, has hit the market - and it comes with its very own scorched backyard and Hills Hoist!

The agency selling this Redfern terrace with park views has been honest about the property's condition. Although the listing describes the home as 'neglected’, the location in a thriving area more than makes up for the lack of an upper-floor balcony.

'It's terrible, awful, very much unloved,' says Hayden Richards of Ray White Touma Group, adding: 'The floors are coming away, the staircase and timber all need replacing, and the yard hasn't been maintained.'

With only a tree stump and a sad-looking pot drying on the fence, the backyard of this early 20th-century Australian home with a Hills Hoist looks like a wasteland. There is not even a speck of greenery.

While we're not sure what caused the fire that left this once beautiful garden in charred ruins, we do know that it's created a unique opportunity for someone out there. Perhaps someone set the overgrown yard ablaze like Muriel’s mother in the movie.

The block size is big for inner city standards, sitting on a northerly 156 sqm block. With some TLC (and maybe even some council permission), there's potential to turn this into two dwellings side-by-side – perfect for investors or families looking for a little extra space.

Plus, it's just a ten-minute walk from Redfern train station! So if you're looking for a 'passion project' or your very own piece of Australian movie history, this is certainly the property for you.

Key Takeaways

  • A Redfern terrace with a burnt-out backyard and scorched Hills Hoist, reminiscent of a scene from the classic film Muriel's Wedding, has hit the market.
  • It's expected to be hot property for one group of buyers: builders, who may be prepared to pay as much as $1.5m for the 'prime, northerly 156 sqm block'.
  • Once a dangerous and violent part of town where taxis wouldn't stop, this part of Redfern is now popular with young professionals and a growing number of families.
So what do you think, folks? Who knows, with a little bit of elbow grease (and a whole lot of imagination), you could turn this place into your very own Muriel's Wedding inspired home.

If you got it at a good price and you have money to spend you could turn this into something amazing.
My first house that I moved into with hubby and our first child was a terrace in Enmore which is near Redfern.
Old Terraces hold so much old Australian charm.

Redfern is still not too good of an area, it's better than it was but is still not safe to walk in some parts especially Everleigh St My sister has lived there for years , so has my aunty.

I lived next door to Surrey Hills post office, and worked evenings in Redfern. Walking home in 1972-3 was good. Obviously no harm was ever
inflicted, had good memories of that area.
