Library Card

Who’s had their names written in countless library cards? This little record was our key to endless adventures with books, journals, magazines, and more. It was such a joy looking at the names of other borrowers and recognising someone you know. 🤩 What library memories can you recall? Share them in the forum.

Oh yes, I remember these the library cards and the slips inside of the library books. It would also have the due date added in with an ink stamp.
Make sure you aren’t late returning that library book! 📕

I was (and am still) a bit of a book nerd. It would be interesting to see back at the local library in the 'Shire' how many books I read, and if they still remain and have cards in them. I loved going to the library from an early age encouraged by my parents and grandparents who would take us each week. I have a large library in our home. Just being around books makes me happy and bring back such happy memories from the stories and experiences they contain. At present, as an older person, very much now into reading biographies and autobiographies.

I was a Primary School Teacher, last century, and the date stamp which was automatic, kind of anyway, it became redundant when we all had the worry about the new milenium and its effect upon our database software on our computers.
I used that date stamp here and in the school at which I taught in Scotland!
It was an easily changed date format at the beginning of each day. Sometimes it took 2 or 3 clicks to bring it up the correct date.

You czn imagine my dimay when I saw that there was no way to change the 19 prefix to a 20!

Quite a few years back in went with my Husband to a mining town in the North of W.A. named Tom Price. It was opencut and we spent 15 years there. I love books and there was a lovely lady running the Tom Price Library called Johanna van Gogh. She gave me job there as her assistant . I loved, and eventually ran the Library myself. Yes everything was on Cards then and it was a way of knowing how often the book was read by the names and dates of our Library Members. We were far away from Perth so there would be a big wooden box of goodies sent up with various types of book to suit as many as possible. This was organised by the Library Board of W.A., and kept the collection fluid as we repacked the box with an equal number of books to send back to them. I look back now at those years and think how very lucky to have been give a job there.

I can certainly remember the library cards and the all the reference cards we had to trawl through to find information for our assignments at school and uni. No quick questions to a search engine then! But I did and still do love a trip to the library as reading has always been my favourite thing - thanks Mum for sharing your love of books with me.

More of a story of my mothers, though I have some memory of the occasion...
Saturday morning. Brother has misplaced his library books. Father is getting frustrated and shouting (not helping the situation). Brother and Elder Sister getting upset. Mother in the kitchen trying to ignore the carry-on.
Number 3 child - me, about 7 years old - plus library books suggests to Younger Sister (about 5 years old) we go to the library on our trikes. Both of us getting upset with Father's anger/noise. So we collect our books and my library card and ride off. We exchange books - Younger Sister (or, more likely, me) convincing the library that parents would be along shortly with Younger Sister's library card. We go home. The route to the library involves crossing two major roads and perhaps 1km (maybe more).
We get home - Brother's books and cards had been found, but where is No. 3 Child and No. 4 Child? More agitation - especially as No.3 child has long history of disappearing, even from the back yard with 'child proof' gates - at random intervals, and never in the same direction twice. Nos 3 and 4 Children ride home, Parents (both) demand of me where had we gone? Don't know why they blamed me.
